Gehry Design for Corcoran Takes a Big Step Forward
The Commission of Fine Arts unanimously approved on October 18 the design for a Corcoran Gallery of Art addition designed by AIA Gold Medalist Frank O. Gehry, FAIA. The milestone is a major one for the project. Because of the site's visual proximity to the White House and the McMillan Plan's monumental corridor in Washington, D.C., the commission's approval of the design is required before the architect can begin design development. "Security by Design: Insights and Best Practices," a 90-minute virtual seminar addressing security design from the architect's viewpoint, will be offered Monday, November 5, from 1–2:30 p.m., EST., at 300 sites nationwide. Components Find Excellence in Disparate Projects
Nineteen Chicago-area firms were honored by their local component for design excellence; AIA Arizona conferred honor, merit, and citation awards on several member projects; the Kentucky Society of Architects recognized five individuals for their outstanding service to the chapter and to the profession. AIA Encourages Architects to Participate in State Security Discussions
States are taking new actions to evaluate security measures in the case of possible terrorist attacks. About half have either designated a cabinet-level homeland security position or are setting up task forces or committees to review security issues and policies. Full Story

Tracking the Economic Impact of Terrorist Attacks on State Legislative Work
AIA Government Affairs released a special report October 24 detailing the economic impact the September 11 attacks will have on state legislative activities affecting architects. Its analysis indicates that AIA state components could face "unanticipated, difficult, and costly" legislative battles. Full Story
