Components Find Excellence in Disparate Projects

AIA Chicago Presents Design Excellence Award Winners

Chicago's Fisher building received a Special Recognition Award from AIA Chicago.Nineteen Chicago-area firms were honored by their local component for design excellence. According to AIA Chicago, winning projects in three continents spanned a "range of style, scale, and budget."

The projects from the 2001 awards program will be on public display at the Chicago Architectural Foundation through December 3 and may be seen at a virtual exhibit on the AIA Chicago Web site.

Arizona Firms Have Their Day in the Sun

AIA Arizona conferred honor, merit, and citation awards on several member projects. The recipients are:

Chapter Honors Kentucky Architects, Projects

YMCA Parking Garage, Metropolitan Offices and Wellness Center Addition, LouisvilleThe Kentucky Society of Architects recognized five individuals for their outstanding service to the chapter and to the profession in the Bluegrass State during the component's annual convention earlier this month.

Lawrence P. Melillo, FAIA, was presented with the C. Julian Oberwarth Award, which recognizes his longstanding commitment to the betterment of the profession and the well-being of architects in Kentucky.

The Citizens Laureate Award was presented to Joseph J. McGowan, PhD, president of Louisville's Bellarmine University, for his leadership, service, and dedication to better living environments and the values of quality architecture.

Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium, Louisville, by Louis and Henry GroupThe Distinguished Service Award went to Dale R. Curth, AIA, Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Inc, Louisville. Honorary membership was bestowed on Peter Morrin, director of the Speed Art Museum in Louisville. The Allied Professional Award went to Jack C. Rhody, retired director of the Division of Building Codes Enforcement, Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings, and Construction, Frankfort.

The society also honored four projects for design excellence and presented awards to three Louisville architecture firms. Ted Flato, FAIA, principal of Lake/Flato Architects Inc., San Antonio, chaired the jury. The other two jury members were two of his associates, Craig S. McMahon, AIA, and Robert Harris, AIA.
