Path to Licensure: NAAB Accredited Degree by Jonathan Matthew Taylor, Assoc. AIA, LEED-AP
Of the Institute’s members, 21 percent are Associates: non-licensed members who have a professional degree in architecture and/or are likely enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP), taking the Architect Registration Exam (ARE) and/or currently working under the supervision of an architect in a technical capacity directly related to the practice of architecture, and/or faculty members in a university program in architecture.

Sharon Park, FAIA is the associate director for architectural history and historic preservation at the Smithsonian Institution after 27 years with the National Park Service. In November, the APT awarded Park its Harley J. McKee Award.

Is an Accredited Degree the Only Valid Path?
This year the National Architectural Accrediting Board will be evaluating its criteria for schools of architecture. This week, Jonathan Taylor, Assoc. AIA, above, explains the NAAB mission and asks whether graduating from an accredited school should be the only pedagogical path to licensure. He says “yes.”
