Memorial Dedicated on the National Mall
More than 100,000 of the “Greatest
Generation” take part
May 29, 2004, a truly glorious day, brought an azure sky, bright
sun, and cool breezes to the nation’s capital, where more
than 100,000 people, a good number of them World War II veterans,
witnessed the dedication of the World War II Memorial on the National
Mall in Washington, D.C. Just after 3 p.m., General Francis P.X.
Kelley (U.S. Marine Corps-retired), chair of the American Battle
Monuments Commission, presented the memorial to President George
W. Bush, who accepted it on behalf of the American people.
An Interview With My Architect Film Maker
Nathaniel Kahn
Lou Kahn’s son talks about his movie
and getting to know about
his dad and architecture
The week before Nathaniel Kahn will hold a special question-and-answer
session in conjunction with the June 11 screening of his film, My
Architect: A Son’s Journey, at the AIA national convention
in Chicago, he talked with AIArchitect
Executive Editor Douglas E. Gordon, Hon. AIA. Kahn describes how
his journey expanded his understanding of his father, his father’s
architecture, and the ability of architecture to make a difference.
National Trust Releases
11 Most Endangered List
The National Trust for Historic Preservation once again is sounding
the alarm to spur preservation of some of the country’s most
imperiled places. The Trust’s list of America’s 11 Most
Endangered Historic Places includes Nine Mile Canyon, called “the
world’s longest art gallery” for its 10,000 Native American
rock-art images, which is threatened by plans for extensive oil
and gas exploration; 2 Columbus Circle bordering New York City’s
Central Park; and the entire state of Vermont, with its “historic
villages, winding back roads, spectacular mountain vistas,”
which is “once again besieged by the onslaught of big-box
retail development.”

Quadrangle Architects’ BMW Toronto
Wins Ontario Association of Architects Award of Excellence
BMW Toronto, the $20-million Canadian corporate flagship retail
showroom by Quadrangle Architects Limited, Toronto, received the
Ontario Association of Architects 2004 Award of Excellence May 14.
The glass-and-steel structure takes advantage of a dramatic site
overlooking a busy parkway and billboard imagery to intrigue both
motorists and pedestrians. The building houses 50,000 square feet
of showroom and office space in six floors of renovated structure
as well as 50,000 square feet of service, parts, and staff areas,
plus parking for 400 cars.
PANDA-MANIA!
Visitors to the nation’s capital have a special crew of 150
goodwill ambassadors on hand to welcome them: colorful pandas handpainted
by local artists and school children. Building on its successful
display of “Party Animals” donkeys and elephants two
years ago, The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities held a design
competition and sponsored the display of playful bears through September.
In the fall, the commission will hold a public auction, with proceeds
used for arts grants and arts education programs. Pictured are “The
Greatest Generation,” by Zora Janosova; “E Pluribus
Pandum,” by Ferebee Streett Thulman; and “Bling-Bling,”
by the Washington Glass Studio (photos by Douglas E. Gordon, Hon.
AIA). For a complete list of pandas and their whereabouts around
the city, visit Pandamania online.

Kim to Receive Emerging Professionals
Mentorship Award
The AIA Emerging Professionals Awards jury selected Grace H. Kim,
AIA, Place Architects, Seattle, to receive the 2004 Emerging Professionals
Mentorship Award. The jury cited Kim’s “exemplary contributions
to our profession as a mentor” and, in particular, her forthcoming
book, Survival Guide to Architectural
Internship, as “an invaluable guide for navigating
the formative years of an architect’s career.” Her work
with the AIA national Mentoring Task Group resulted in production
of Mentorship,
a Journey in Collaborative Learning, now on the AIA Web site.
Kim, who served as Washington State IDP Coordinator from 2000–02,
will receive her award on June 10 during the National Associates
Committee Reception at the AIA national convention in Chicago. For
more on Kim and her achievements, visit AIA Seattle online.

Your Kiplinger Connection
(members only)
Energy: Continuing high energy
costs will spur alternative sources, but very, very slowly. World
business: U.S. exporters will see a brighter time ahead as
Canada, Mexico, and other trade partners show strong growth for
the coming year. Politics: Twenty
states will be hotly contested in November, and every one will be
critical to the presidential election.
AIArchitect offers AIA members exclusive access to three
stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for
the coming year. Nonmembers
may subscribe to The Kiplinger Letter.

Design for Aging Means Offering Choices
Recording the latest innovations in a rapidly developing facility
type, the AIA Design for Aging Center offers its just-released Design
for Aging Review. The book highlights 16 continuing care
retirement communities, 23 assisted-living facilities, 15 nursing
homes, 5 residences, and 5 other projects for seniors. The key to
design for an aging population is to provide a wide range of options,
the jury advised in the book’s introduction. They also offer
10 other observations to help you navigate this highly competitive
market.
