A
Very Special Memorial Day
More than 100,000 people, a good portion of them World War II veterans,
will attend the dedication of the World War II Memorial on the National
Mall May 29. Designed by Friedrich St. Florian, AIA, with Leo A.
Daly, and graced with bronze sculptures and castings by Raymond
Kaskey, FAIA, the memorial rests lightly on the former site of the
Rainbow Pool, between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.
AIArchitect’s editors will
have the privilege of serving as volunteers at the dedication, and
will bring you an eyewitness account. Photo © Rick Latoff/Amercian

Steel
Yourself for Material Shortages Across the Board, Economists Advise
It hasn’t been a good year for construction-material buyers.
Steel prices have been soaring since October 2003. Portland cement
is becoming difficult to purchase at any price. And the high price
of oil is causing people to worry about recession again. Economists
scheduled to talk at the AIA Convention June 11 say it all has to
do with simple supply and demand, except it’s not so simple.
Celebrating
Masonry in Michigan
AIA Michigan and the Masonry Institute of Michigan Inc. recognized
seven Michigan projects for excellence in masonry design. A jury
from AIA Orange County (Calif.) reviewed 26 entries, all buildings
that use masonry as the primary building material or show that masonry
was an important element in the overall solution of the design.
The winners received their bronze “M-Awards” at the
29th annual Masonry Honor Awards banquet in Livonia, Mich.
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S
OFFICE
Dreamers and Doers
AIA President Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA, notes that, like a number
of the AIA’s larger components, AIA/DC publishes a magazine.
And like all of these publications, Architecture
DC provides a forum or chat room where the community’s
appetite for design and the architect’s imagination intersect.
At a time when good news does not often make the headlines, Hopkins
says, these publications offer an inspirational message written
in language refreshingly free of jargon that engages the public.
It’s a message that begs to be heard.

Fox and Fowle Greens Up the Bronx Zoo’s
Lion House
New York City's first green landmark building
combines the best of old and new
New York City’s Fox & Fowle Architects, the Wildlife Conservation
Society, several New York City officials, and various and sundry
second graders on May 17 unveiled the renovation design for the
historic Lion House at the Bronx Zoo. The architects report that
the adaptive reuse project marks the first landmark building in
New York to realize a LEED™ standard for sustainability.

A Model for Calculating Budgets for Security
Design
Among the lessons in Building Security
Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design, edited by
Barbara A. Nadel, FAIA, is a model for determining the potential
cost impacts of incorporating nine building security elements into
a design. “During planning and design, owners must determine
how their annual operational costs will balance against a one-time
capital construction cost investment,” writes chapter author
Elizabeth J. Heider, AIA. “This analysis has presented typical
costs for an order-of-magnitude pricing approach.”

AIA Contract Documents: We Listened
You asked for improved Contract Documents software, and now you
have it. If you haven’t yet heard, a new documents delivery
platform is fundamentally changing how AIA documents are crafted.
It’s the new AIA Contract Documents software, completely redesigned
and based on Microsoft® Word. Since its launch last October,
more than 15,000 users are finding that the new software offers
greater flexibility in contract document drafting, more effective
collaboration across the project team, and unprecedented choices
in how documents are printed, stored, and shared. If you’re
still using another documents platform, you owe it to yourself to
take a fresh look at the latest in documents delivery. View an online
demonstration of all that the new software has to offer to get projects
starting faster, running more smoothly, and finishing more successfully.
Or download and start using the new AIA Contract Documents software
