national convention 2004
Four Bylaws Amendments Up for Vote
by 2003 President Thompson E. Penney,
FAIA, and President-elect Douglas L Steidl, FAIA, Co-chairs, Long
Range Planning Advisory Group
Next month, AIA convention delegates will be asked to vote on four
proposed Bylaws amendments. Why so many? Are they related? If so,
how? And what do these changes seek to accomplish? The members of
the AIA Long Range Planning Advisory Group, which first proposed
these amendments, would like to take this opportunity to address
these and related questions.
AIAS
Chair Affair Competition Has Architecture Students Sitting Pretty
Finals will be judged and on view at convention
Move over, Charles and Ray! A program jointly sponsored by the AIAS
and the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) challenged
architecture students, working individually or in teams, to design
a chair using only corrugated cardboard and glue. Rules required
that the chair elevate the user off the ground and be comfortable
for an extended period of time. The finalists will be on display
in the AIAS Student Lounge on the Expo floor at the AIA national
convention in Chicago, June 10–12.
Candidates Respond to
Questions From the National Associates Committee
The National Associates Committee posed three questions to the candidates
for AIA office. Candidates were free to address issues raised by
the questionnaire in whatever form they found most appropriate,
without necessarily answering each question separately. Each response
was limited to no more than 500 words. Following are the questions
and the candidates’ responses, as they submitted them via
e-mail to the AIA by May 17.
2004
AIA Wisconsin Design Awards
AIA Wisconsin is pleased to present the four honor- and three merit-award
winners named at the chapter’s 73rd convention, April 21,
at Monona Terrace in Madison. Jurors James Dayton, AIA, James Dayton
Design, Minneapolis; Margaret Helfand, FAIA, Helfand Architecture,
New York City; and James von Klemperer, AIA, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates,
New York City reviewed 64 submissions to make their choices. They
also presented a special recognition award to an “oldie made
a goody”.
Lever
House to Host Site-Specific Art Collections
Art collector Aby Rosen, president of RFR Holding LLC, the owner
of New York City’s revered Lever House on Park Avenue, has
announced formation of the Lever House Art Collection, a series
of exhibitions specially designed for the building’s lobby.
The first show, launched May 13 and on view until August 31, offers
a collection of Cuban-born artist Jorge Pardo’s brightly colored
glass light sculptures atop wood centipede bases. The figures multiply
many times over in the famous curtain wall and highly polished terrazzo
floor of the 1952 Lever House, by SOM’s Gordon Bunshaft. Rosen
says he will continue to build a collection of site-specific works,
perhaps three or four a year, and allow exhibitions to travel when
they reach a critical mass.

Behold the Green Matrix
Ratcliff architects develop and share
sustainable design tool
It’s been a couple of years since Dan Meza, AIA, a project
architect at Ratcliff in Emeryville, Calif., and some of his colleagues
gathered to start a green resources committee—and they have
been busy ever since. In that time, the committee “pooled
their enthusiasm as well as their resources” to devise a learning
tool they call the Green Matrix.
