Steidl
Takes Helm as 2005 AIA President
Term kicks off with citations
from Ohio’s State House
and Senate
Douglas L Steidl, FAIA, founding principal of Ohio’s
Braun & Steidl Architects Inc., became the 81st AIA president
December 3 at the Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Steidl succeeds
Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA. Ohio Representative Chris Widener, FAIA,
presented Steidl with special recognition and citations from the
Ohio Senate, the House of Representatives, and Governor Bob Taft. “I
am pleased to extend my warmest personal greetings and congratulations
to Douglas L Steidl on your inauguration,” read the citation
from the governor. “Your leadership, innovation, and expertise
will be beneficial additions to the American Institute of Architects
and will certainly help further the organization’s mission.”
Stanford
Britt, FAIA, Honored with Whitney M. Young Jr. Award
The AIA Board of Directors named Stanford R. Britt, FAIA, the recipient
of the 2005 Whitney M. Young Jr. Award on December 2. Given to
an architect who exemplifies the profession’s responsibility
to society, the Whitney Young Award honors the former head of the
Urban League who, at the 1968 AIA national convention, reproached
the audience of architects for their lack of civic responsibility
and challenged them to become a positive force for social change: “You
are not a profession that has distinguished itself by your social
and civic contributions to the cause of civil rights. You are most
distinguished by your thunderous silence and your complete irrelevance.”
Kahn’s Yale Center for British
Art Receives Twenty-five Year Award
AIA Gold Medalist Louis I. Kahn’s Yale Center
for British Art in New Haven, Conn., was selected by
the Institute Honor Awards for Architecture Jury on November
19 to receive the 2005 Twenty-five Year Award, honoring
structures of enduring significance that were completed
25 to 35 years ago. Begun in 1973, one year before Kahn’s death, and opened to the
public in 1977, the Yale Center for British Art is among
Kahn’s finest structures.
Norbert Young Honored with Kemper Award
for Service to the Profession
The AIA Board of Directors on December 2 elected Norbert W.
Young Jr., FAIA, as the 2005 recipient of the Edward C. Kemper Award.
Named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director,
the award recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to
the profession of architecture through service to the Institute.
Young’s
commitment to architecture extends well beyond his being president
of McGraw-Hill Construction, nominators note.

Colorado Convention Center Goes Through
a Phase II Expansion
When Fentress Bradburn Architects embarked on the design of Phase
I of the Colorado Convention Center, the firm knew there was room
for growth. That opportunity took shape in the following decade
and culminated in the grand opening of the Phase II expansion in
December. The Phase II Expansion helps the center reach into the
community, creating linkages to Denver’s educational, civic,
and cultural entities.
