Comprehensive Consumer Information on
American Hardwoods
The Hardwood Council has introduced a specification tool for design
professionals to show clients woods readily available from the
domestic market. Twenty 2-3/4x6-inch samples, from Alder and Ash
to Sycamore and Walnut, allow one to feel the heft and texture
of the material and compare natural color and grain patterns. An
accompanying booklet and CD give details on workability, performance
characteristics, and common uses of each species. A four-tone translucent
plastic overlay helps show how light-to-dark staining of the wood
will affect finished appearance. The package is available to design
professionals for $25 on the Hardwood Council’s Web site.

BOOK REVIEW
Building Diplomacy, The Architecture
of American Embassies, by
Elizabeth Gill Lui
If you have ever longed for credentials for an
insider’s tour of some of the most prestigious
symbols of democracy and diplomacy, your paperwork has
arrived. A new publication, Building
Diplomacy, The Architecture
of American Embassies, by
fine artist and photographer Elizabeth Gill Lui, assisted
by screenwriter Keya Keita, is your passport to American
diplomatic enclaves around the world. Beginning with
a preface and introductory piece that give context to
the images within, the mother-daughter duo team up to
provide an absorbing look at the evolution and current
state of the face of the buildings through which, Lui
writes, “we deliver America’s vision to the
rest of the world.”

Trust Releases New Online Historic Atlas
The National Trust for Historic Preservation announces the
launch of Preservation Atlas, a new online resource that provides
information about Trust activities and sites throughout the U.S.
Preservation Atlas allows visitors to search a database of the thousands
of National Trust offerings, including historic sites, America’s
11 Most Endangered Historic Places, Dozen Distinctive Destinations,
Historic Hotels of America, preservation grants, and Main Street
and Legal Defense Fund activities. The atlas uses cartographic software
that enables users to locate ongoing preservation projects by entering
a location or specific Trust activity, project, or site. Visit the
Trust Web site to access Preservation Atlas.

AIA Ethics Council Releases Guidelines
for Attribution of Project Credit
“Perhaps the most frequent violation of the AIA’s Code
of Ethics is that of giving appropriate credit and recognition,” say
the newly released “Guidelines for the Attribution of Credit,” issued
in October by the AIA Ethics Council. “Because of the frequency
of complaints in this area, and because of numerous ‘how
to’ requests, the Council undertook to write guidelines,” says
Council Chair Peter A. Piven, FAIA, in his introduction to the
guidelines, available in full text here.
University
of British Columbia Launches Competition for Campus Main Entrance
The University of British Columbia announced on October 26 the
launch of an international architectural competition for University
Boulevard, the main entrance to its Vancouver campus. The competition
comprises five building sites totalling 400,000 square feet and
will include a new university square, a new greenway, new shops
and services, university housing, and all the open spaces and associated
pedestrian connections between the new and existing buildings for
an estimated budget of $82 million (USD). The first of two stages
will shortlist participants to six and then to three competitors,
who will prepare design submissions. A jury that includes Arthur
Erickson, Hon. FAIA; Moshe Safdie, FAIA; Leon Krier; Demetri Porphyrios,
and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, FAIA, will choose the three finalists.
Expressions of Interest are due November
30.
