Design Is the Spice of Life in the Nutmeg State

Celebrating the accomplishments of Connecticut architects and project
excellence, AIA Connecticut announced the results of its 2004 annual
Design Awards program on October 26. The jury chose recipients for
a total of four awards, ten citations, and one honorable mention.
Among the project types honored are residential, commercial, and
institutional buildings; interior projects; preservation works; and
unbuilt designs.
USGBC Releases LEED™ for Existing Buildings
Tools now in place for existing-buildings
rating system
The U.S. Green Building Council announced October 22 the release
of the LEED for Existing Building (LEED-EB) Green Building
Rating System. LEED-EB makes LEED certification available to
existing buildings and provides an opportunity for ongoing recertification
for previously certified LEED buildings. The LEED-EB criteria
cover building operations and systems upgrades in existing buildings
where the majority of interior or exterior surfaces remain unchanged.
Ezra Stoller, Architect-Photographer,
1915–2004
Ezra Stoller, the architectural photographer who captured and shared with architects
and the public alike the life force of the Modern Movement in crisp black-and-white,
died October 29 at his home in Williamstown, Mass., following complications of
a stroke. It was Stoller’s architect’s eye and discipline that moved
him to capture on film the structure and spirit, body and soul of the icons of
Modern architecture, from Kahn’s Salk Institute in La Jolla to
Saarinen’s TWA terminal in New York and close to all of the great
postwar buildings in between.
ENR Conference Offers Insight into Corporate
Decision Makers’ Thinking
Billions of dollars worth of construction were represented in one
room at the eighth annual ENR Construction Summit in New York
City, October 29. Leaders of some of the largest building organizations
in the world came together to discuss the construction industry
from their point of view. Although focused mainly on the actual
construction of large-scale buildings, much of the knowledge
gained could be applied by architects working on buildings of
any size with clients at every level of sophistication.

Gould Evans Creates a Light-Filled Multifunctional
Hub for ASU East’s Student Union
Students enjoy their campus’ first
new building
Arizona State University East’s Student Union in Mesa, Ariz.,
designed by Gould Evans, opened for business October 14. This 27,000-square-foot
structure has the distinction of being the first new public-use
building on campus, joining its renovated neighbors as ASU East
quickly transforms itself into a polytechnic campus offering technical
and professional degree programs. The architects report that the
goal of the student union project was to “create a place
where students and faculty can meet, relax, and prepare for classes;
the end result being an easy transition from commuter school to
full-service college campus.”

Guidelines for Design and Construction
of Hospital and Health Care Facilities
The 2001 edition of the Guidelines
for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities, by the AIA and the Facility
Guidelines Institute, is in the midst of a revision cycle. Architects,
engineers, and health-care professionals who plan new and renovated
health-care projects use the Guidelines in
their practices. Additionally, authorities in 42 states, the Joint
Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and
several federal agencies use the Guidelines as a reference code
or standard when reviewing construction designs and plans, as well
as completed health-care facilities. The draft manuscript of the
2006 edition will be posted for public comment until January
31, 2005. Visit the AIA
Academy of Architecture for Health Web site to access the draft
and forms for revisions proposals.
Berkeley Announces 2005 Undergrad Architectural
Design Excellence Competition
The seventh annual Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural
Design Excellence Competition, sponsored by the University of California,
Berkeley Department of Architecture, is now open. The prize
supports the study of architecture as a social art and acknowledges
excellence in architectural writing and thought. Undergraduate
architecture majors in accredited schools of architecture throughout
the world may compete. The 2005 competition question concerns what
makes a place truly public. This year’s prize is dedicated
to the work of Forum UNESCO—University and Heritage, striving
to connect the resources of universities, teachers, and students
worldwide in the preservation of our cultural heritage. Finalists
are eligible to compete for the travel fellowship. Proposals for
the essay prize competition will be accepted online until December
10. For more
information, visit the Berkeley Prize Web site.
