Projects Show How Good Design Achieves Business Objectives
Presenting the 2004 Business
Week/Architectural Record Awards
The AIA is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2004 Business
Week/Architectural Record (BW/AR) Awards, given annually
to honor architects and clients who best use good design to achieve
important objectives for their client organizations. The BW/AR
Awards program, now in its eighth year, is sponsored by the AIA
in conjunction with Architectural Record
and Business Week, both publications
of the McGraw-Hill Companies. This year’s recipients consist
of three government facilities, five cultural/educational projects,
and two aid organizations. They range from a community center in
LA’s Skid Row to an iron studio in rural North Carolina,
from a martial arts facility in Japan to the foreign ministry in
Jerusalem. At the core, though, they all share one attribute: They
understand how good design can achieve important organizational
objectives.

Awards Bring Beauty off Its Artificial Pedestal
Are architecture awards mere beauty contests? Definitely not, argues
AIA President Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA. Highlighting compelling values
such as accessibility, craftsmanship, urbanity, sustainability, transparency,
and economy, award programs speak forcefully to clients and the public
alike.
Building Performance: Where Do We Stand,
and Where Are We Going?
AIA Building Performance Committee Searches for Answers
AIA Building Performance Knowledge Committee Chair David Bullen,
AIA, convened a symposium October 15 in Washington, D.C., to allow
committee members, other interested architects, and experts in
different building-industry professions to compare notes on the
state-of-the-art of building performance and where this field of
study is headed. With the able aid of Steven A. Parshall, FAIA,
Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc., who served as moderator and
facilitator, the group explored building-performance goals, metrics,
and promises for the future.
Questions, Answers on JOBS Tax Bill
In response to recent congressional passage of the JOBS tax bill,
which includes a $358 million tax cut for architecture and engineering
firms, a number of AIA members have submitted questions to the
AIA Government Advocacy Team. Team Vice President Ron Faucheux
supplies some specific answers.

Mitsubishi Electric Spiral Escalators
Debut in Las Vegas
Just one more little reason to come to the AIA national
convention in Las Vegas next year: Mitsubishi Electric on October
22 unveiled the region’s first spiral escalators at the debut of
the Phase III expansion of The Forum Shops at Caesars, by executive
architect KGA Architecture and designer Dougall Associates. Each
of four custom-made, 78-step escalators, configured in two tiers,
has approximately 6,000 parts (about 1.3 times more than a linear
escalator, Mitsubishi says). Each was installed in seven sections
for the new Forum Shops at Caesars, a 175,000-square-foot, three-level
new home of 60 shops. Other than the San Francisco Center, the
Forum Shops is the only site of spiral escalators in the U.S. For
more information about the escalators, visit
Mitsubishi’s
Web site.

Rios Clementi Hale Creates Chess Park
to Tie Community Together
Rios Clementi Hale Studio’s recently opened Chess Park in
Glendale, Calif., which offers a quirky, concept-driven design
that transforms a bland passageway into a thriving, community-oriented
public space for a variety of users. As part of the City of Glendale’s
redevelopment efforts, the 4,500-square-foot Chess Park provides
residents, the local Chess Club, and other community organizations
a multifunctional urban park that “fosters artistry, gamesmanship,
intellectual debate, and challenge,” according to the architects.

Construction-site Recycling Saves Money
and Landfill Space, EPA Shows
To quantify the benefits of the U.S. Green Building Council LEED™ program,
the U.S. General Services Administration compared LEED criteria
to results. The study findings, published by the National Institute
of Building Sciences, include a case study of a 72,000-square-foot,
single-story laboratory with, among many other LEED-Gold-rated
factors, an exemplary construction-site recycling program.
Primer on Project Delivery Helps
Owners Understand Procurement
The American Institute of Architects and the Associated General
Contractors of America on October 15 unveiled a new booklet, Primer
on Project Delivery, to help architects and contractors achieve
quality projects that fulfill owner expectations and are delivered
on time and on budget. Primer on Project
Delivery helps owners
who are unfamiliar with the various ways of procuring design and
construction services. The goals of the booklet include developing
a set of definitions for the three primary delivery methods: design-bid-build,
design-build, and construction management at-risk (CM@R, also known
by the designations CMc, CM/GC, and GC/CM), and encourage consensus
on a set of defining characteristics for each delivery method.
