New Tax Cut for Architects Passes
Congress
The Senate passed and sent to President Bush on October 11 the “JOBS” tax
bill, which includes a $358 million tax cut on architectural and
engineering services performed in the U.S. for construction projects
by sole proprietors, partnerships, LLCs, subchapter S corporations,
and C corporations.
AIA-Supported
Brightfields/Brownfields Legislation Passes
The Senate on October 7 passed S. 1134, the Economic Development
Administration (EDA) Reauthorization, which includes a section
that authorizes $5 million for a “Brightfields Demonstration
Project.” The
House followed suit on October 8, passing the measure 388-31.
Siegel Triumphs in Tour of Hope
After soaring through the Arizona desert; climbing Colorado’s
mountains; and riding the vast, hilly terrain of Illinois, Wisconsin,
and Iowa in a variety of temperatures and conditions, two-time
leukemia survivor Michael Siegel, AIA, finished his 3,500-mile
cross-country ride for cancer research in Washington, D.C. He
triumphantly bicycled into the nation’s capital with six-time
Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and 19 other riders from
the national Bristol Myers Squibb Tour of Hope team October 9.
The two-time cancer survivor made the eight-day journey with a “sense
of urgency” and competition that guided him to his victorious
and inspiring finish.
AIA Kansas City Recognizes a Bumper Crop of Award-Winning Projects
AIA Kansas City reports that competition was keen and the awards
highly coveted during the chapter’s 2004 Design Awards
program, as Kansas City’s best architectural work was
judged by nationally acclaimed architects and designers. The
competition encourages and recognizes design excellence in several
categories, and the chapter notes happily that this year’s
competition attracted an unprecedented 82 entries from 26 top
design firms. This year, the chapter chose to give out three
Honor Awards and five Merit Awards.
Gold Medalist Philip Johnson, 98, Retires from Practice
The 1978 AIA Gold Medalist, 1979 Pritzker Prize winner, and 20th-century
master of Modern American architecture, Philip Johnson, FAIA,
who recently turned 98, announced from his iconic Glass House
in New Canaan, Conn., on October 7 that he is withdrawing from
architecture practice and from his firm, Philip Johnson/Alan
Ritchie Architects. “I am leaving the firm in good hands
to my partner of 10 years and design collaborator for over 27,
Alan Ritchie, who will continue our quality and design excellence,” Johnson
said in a statement to the press. “Alan is now representing
me, and I am confident he will continue the legacy of Philip
Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects.”
AIANYS Donates to AIA Florida’s
Hurricane Relief
Component recalls generosity of Florida architects
AIA New York State Chapter President Peter Arsenault, AIA, delivered
a $5,000 check to AIA Florida President Mickey Jacob, AIA, during
September’s AIA Grand States meeting in New York City. AIANYS
made the donation in appreciation for the support of Florida architects
after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The AIANYS donation
will be forwarded to aid in Florida’s hurricane relief efforts.
Additionally, in response to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s appeal
to state associations to raise $2.5 million collectively toward
Florida’s Hurricane Relief Fund, AIA Florida is challenging
its nearly 2,700 members to meet the AIANYS donation. To contribute,
visit the AIA Florida Web site.

Going Solar Enhances Visibility in Newport Beach
Morse-Boudreaux Architects wanted to harvest the sun and, using
systems integration, create a shaded spot for parking. The large
photovoltaic array they built beside their offices on the rapidly
developing edge of Newport Beach, Calif., makes a visual statement
and has created a potential new market for this architecture firm.
