We Remember September 11
This year, we remember innocent victims and senseless devastation. We remember courageous rescuers and the steadfast survivors. We remember that we are blessed with the chance to carry on, the creativity to dream, and ultimately the mission to build a better world for all. We remember, always, to look forward.

BOOK WATCH
The Steps of Pittsburgh: Portrait of a City, by Bob Regan, with photographs by Tim Fabian (2004, The Local History Company, Pittsburgh).
This gem of a book presents the delights of the 712 sets of steps—that’s 44,095 treads rising 24,090 feet—that demonstrate the ruggedness of Pittsburgh’s terrain and the heartiness of its working-class souls who climbed down every day to work and shop and up every day to return to their homes. The book is an architect’s delight: Its author, Bob Regan, is a visiting University of Pittsburgh professor and a Geographic Information Systems specialist who has created a “step survey” replete with maps both hand-done and computer-generated. He offers a description of the lifestyles generated and sustained by the steps, from a history of the steelworkers who first used them to the bicycle cops and Meals on Wheels deliverers who use them today. For right-brain appeal, you can’t beat professional photographer Tim Fabian’s gritty, grainy black-and-white works. Not for the faint-hearted, the author presents six walking tours and even a 1944 newspaper article by reporter Jo Ann Healey detailing the three schools of climbing techniques: “Stop-and-breathe,” “stoop-and-pull,” and “stand-up-and-take-it.” For planning your walking tour, or even if your style is “sit-down-and-look-at-the-pictures,” The Steps of Pittsburgh delivers. To order, call the AIA Bookstore, 800-242-3837 (option #4).

Viva the AIA National Convention and Exposition
Next year we’re in Las Vegas, May 19–21. So plan ahead!
The AIA national convention seems to grow bigger and better every year. When the AIA 2004 Convention and Expo met June 10–12 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, more than 22,000 building design professionals—the largest convention attendance ever—visited 877 leading-edge companies displaying products and services for the design and construction industry and occupying more than 182,000 square feet of exhibit space. Attendees also collectively earned more than 66,415 learning units from 29 interactive pre-convention workshops, 150 seminars, 49 professional tours of Chicago’s spectacularly varied architecture, and selected AIA/CES Registered Providers.

Your Kiplinger Connection (members only)
Home prices: The recent market slowdown will continue, but don’t expect an ’80s-style bust. Energy: Federal pricing intervention just isn’t going to happen—too risky. The economy: Job gains make an interest-rate hike on September 21 very likely.
AIArchitect
offers AIA members exclusive access to three stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for the coming year. Nonmembers may subscribe to The Kiplinger Letter.

Good Worship Space Acoustics Work for Both Speech and Music
Words of wisdom from Dennis A. Paoletti, FAIA
To give a sense of spirituality, the best-designed worship spaces accommodate both “live,” relatively long reverberation time for music and “dead,” short reverberation time for clarity of speech. The newly published Places of Worship, from Wiley, explains this concept and describes some emerging technologies that further enhance worship-space acoustic performance.
