Calatrava’s
Architecture Embodies the Majesty of Olympic Games
Architect Santiago Calatrava reports that organizers of the 2004
Olympic and Paralympic Games resolved to improve and harmonize the
existing Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), its surrounding area,
and its access routes to meet program needs as well as provide an
architectural legacy for the citizens of Athens. Calatrava approached
this challenge for the master plan and design of these 250 acres
in a northern Athens suburb by designing entrance plazas, pedestrian
paths, and landscaping; creating major public gathering places;
and adding dramatic new architectural elements along with ecologically
sensitive plantings and efficient waste-management solutions.

Signs of Vigorous Component Life!
AIA President Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA, says that a recent journey
through state and local component publications showed him that diversity
is alive and well at AIA chapters across the country. If you want
to monitor the vital signs of today’s profession, he says,
forget the glossy shelter magazines. Check out the publications
produced by AIA components.
SHC’s
Atlantic Terminal Office Building Is the Tops in Brooklyn
New York City’s venerable Swanke Hayden Connell announces
completion of the new 10-story, 400,000-square-foot Atlantic Terminal
Office, which sits atop a four-story, 375,000-square-foot retail
shopping center by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer. The retail center itself
tops the largest public transportation hub in Brooklyn and the third
largest in New York City, housing renovated Long Island Railroad
and subway stations. The transportation hubs dictated that the main
lobby be offset from the tower above, so four shuttle elevators
take passengers from this lobby to a fifth-floor sky lobby, which
in turn feeds eight passenger elevators to office floors above.
The building’s façade employs masonry to harmonize
with its neighbors, painted metal windows, and terra-cotta rain-screen
panels. The architect reports that it is the first building in New
York City to feature a terra-cotta-clad curtain wall. The façade
also uses a horizontal glass band to “lift” the offices
visually above the retail space at the fifth-floor lobby level.
The fully accessible building features a state-of-the-art energy
management system, emergency power generation, and heightened security
measures, the architects report.
Obituaries
It is always difficult when the AIA loses a member of its collective
family. It is three times as hard when three distinguished members—two
architects and one champion for architects—no longer walk
in our midst. Here is tribute to celebrating their spirit and vowing
to carry it forward in our own professional endeavors.

Every Client Should Feel Like Your Only
Client
It may sound simple, but the key to a successful international practice
is to provide complete service and let your clients know that they
are your first concern, always. The International Committee Chair
William Higgins, AIA, finds that true in his practice and in the
practices of his colleagues.
