Soft Spot in Economy Reflected in July
Billings
Design phase averages nine months; more
for institutional projects
In July, architecture firms felt the effects of a (hopefully) brief
slowdown in the economy, says AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker,
PhD, Hon. AIA. After a strong first half of the year, the second
half began on a down note as more firms reported a decline in billings
than reported an increase. Despite a retrenchment in monthly business
activity, firms reported strong gains in inquiries for new projects.
Gensler
to Design JetBlue Terminal for JFK
New structure complements Saarinen’s
TWA terminal
An agreement between JetBlue Airways and the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey approved August 4 paves the way for a new Gensler-designed
terminal at New York’s JFK International Airport that will
allow restoration of the TWA Terminal. The architect reports that
the new structure’s low profile creates a respectful background
to the iconic Terminal 5, designed by AIA Gold Medalist Eero Saarinen,
which fronts the new building’s site. The JetBlue terminal’s
geometric lines and clean metal and glass enclosure foils the soaring
concrete curves of Saarinen’s masterpiece.
Institute Honors for Professional Achievement
Awards Deadlines Coming Up
Kemper, Thomas Jefferson, Whitney M. Young
Jr., Young Architects awards nominations due October 15
It’s time to honor peers for the magnificent work they do—in
service to the AIA, in the public and government arenas, and for
social responsibility. Whose contributions do you most admire? Which
young architects have truly impressed you with their dedication
and efforts? Do you know a public official who has taken a stand
for the good of the built environment? All of their efforts can
be appreciated formally through the AIA Professional Achievement
Awards.
Cycles
of Hope: Architect Rides with Lance Armstrong to Promote Cancer
Research
Thanks, he says, to drugs he received through clinical trials, leukemia
survivor Michael Siegel, AIA, had the endurance twice to send his
cancer into remission. This fall, he is again testing his stamina
by cycling 3,500 miles cross-country to promote the importance and
expansion of clinical trials and cancer research, goals near and
dear to his and his family’s heart. The VOA Associates senior
vice president is among the 20 riders selected from nearly 1,200
applicants to make the journey from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C.,
with six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, in the Bristol-Myers
Squibb Tour of Hope.

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking
the Way We Make Things
by William McDonough, FAIA, and Michael Braungart
reviewed by Heather Livingston
Human potential is the subject of the McDonough and Braungart book
on environmentally sensitive design (North Point Press, 2002). It
lauds our ingenuity as a species and looks toward a future far greater
than we have collectively imagined thus far. At its heart is a simple
idea: create nothing that harms future generations.

to the Masters Tournament that followed. The new facility, designed
by Robbie/Young + Wright Architects, includes the 12,500-seat Stadium

Evaluating Prospective Clients
Improve your odds of success by evaluating your potential clients
with the same critical judgment you apply to other areas of your
practice. Although you cannot determine with certainty whether a
prospective client is a good business prospect, you can be alert
to clear danger signals. Protect yourself from under-funded, unsophisticated,
or otherwise risky clients by seeking the answers to a few basic
questions.
AIA Chief Economist Kermit
Baker to Discuss Construction Trends at Outlook 2005 Executive Conference
McGraw-Hill Construction invites AIA architects to attend the Outlook
2005 Executive Conference, October 27–28 in Washington, D.C.,
where AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA, will discuss
construction trends from the architect’s perspective. The
conference brings together executives—from design and contracting
firms, industry associations, and major building product manufacturing
firms—who are interested in getting the vital information
they need to solve real business challenges.
Reminder: Entries for
SBIC 2004 Awards Program Due August 31
The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) has issued a call
for entries for its annual awards program, which recognizes professionals
making exceptional contributions to sustainability. New this year
is the “Exemplary Sustainable Building” Award, sponsored
in part by the GSA Public Buildings Service, which will recognize
buildings that demonstrate a whole-building approach to design.
All building professionals are eligible to participate in this category.
The traditional “Best Sustainable Practice” Award recognizes
SBIC members who demonstrate excellence in a wide variety of areas.
Winners in each category will be honored at an awards ceremony on
October 13, following SBIC’s annual forum, Cents
and Sustainability: The Ripple Effects of Integrated Design,
in Washington, D.C. To learn more about the Sustainable Buildings
Industry Council and its awards programs, visit the council online.
Conference
Abstracts Help Define Safe Spaces
The complete abstracts from the Safe
Spaces: Designing for Security and Civic Values symposium,
cosponsored by the AIA, are now available online free of charge.
The symposium, held last month in Chicago, focused on how architects
and others can balance building security with quality design, livability,
and openness. The abstracts feature top experts in security design
writing about risk assessment, construction methods and materials,
security landscaping, crime prevention through environmental design
(CPTED), policy tools for determining appropriate responses to security
threats, and other topics. To access the abstracts, visit American
Society of Landscape Architects, a conference cosponsor, online.
