Memoriam: E. Fay Jones, 1921–2004
E. Fay Jones, FAIA, died August 30 at his home in Fayetteville,
Ark. He was 83. Jones is renowned for his “Ozark Style”
in chapels and homes across the nation, his extensive writings,
and his long tenure at the University of Arkansas. He is the first
of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Fellows to receive the AIA
Gold Medal (in 1990). A full tribute will appear in next week’s
AIArchitect.
National Trust Tax Credit Capital Partners
Expand Small Historic Rehabilitation Investment Opportunities
The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s for-profit
subsidiary, the National Trust Community Investment Corporation
(NTCIC), on August 18 announced its partnership with Tax Credit
Capital LLC of New Orleans to expand the former Small Deal Fund
(founded in 2002) into the National Trust Small Deal Fund (SDF).
SDF invests in very small historic tax credit projects—approximating
$1.2 million–$3.5 million in total development costs—that
normally generate $200,000–$650,000 in tax-credit equity.
ASLA
Announces 2004 Professional Awards
The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced the
recipients of its 2004 Professional Awards, which will be presented
during the ASLA annual meeting, October 29–November 2, in
Salt Lake City. The nine-member jury selected 33 projects to receive
awards from a field of more than 550 entries.
SBRA Expanding and Renovating Concord
Academy Chapel
The prestigious Concord Academy in Concord, Mass., selected the
equally prestigious Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott (SBRA)
to expand and renovate the school’s Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel,
originally an early 19th-century meetinghouse
in New Hampshire. Purchased in the 1950s, the wood-frame building
was dismantled and reconstructed on campus by a crew of faculty
and students. A vestibule, balcony, steeple, and bell—as well
as decorative woodcarvings by the students—have enhanced the
chapel. SBRA will add 1,000 square feet to accommodate the entire
student body and enlarge the space for choral and other performances.
The renovation will primarily upgrade existing building systems.
To match the rich patina of the original meeting house interior,
the expansion will use wood that has survived intact from the 19th-century
logging of first-growth forests. The project is slated for completion
this month.

Chicago Botanic Garden Enables Hobbyists
of All Ages, Abilities
For the many who visit the Chicago Botanic Garden, the 11,000-square-foot
Beuhler Enabling Garden is their own piece of heaven in the luscious
greenery. Desirous of a place to dig dirt or prune plants but unable
to pursue traditional “hands and knees” gardening, they
come to the Chicago garden to find the tools that can help them
partake in a favorite activity at any age, ability, or stage of
life.

HR: Employee stock ownership plans
can shelter owners nearing retirement from capital gains tax. Travel:
FAA actions to reduce flight delays and low-fare landings may mean
less service and higher fares. Energy:
With energy shortages here for the long term, government and corporations
are looking at heavier investment in energy conservation and faster
paybacks.

Asset Management: Tenant Retention Through
Strategic Renovation
During renovation of one of its lower-occupancy properties, the
U.S. General Services Administration discovered the importance of
aesthetics. Concerned they would lose more tenants during the four-year
project, they turned to Gensler. The solution: Use a refurbishing
of the lobby area to get tenants involved and earn their trust.
“Controlling
Chaos” Topic for 2004 Desert Practice Conference
Ray Bradbury, Dr. Richard Farson to deliver
keynote speeches
The AIA Practice Management Knowledge Community and the AIA California
Council invite you to join them at the 2004 Desert Practice Conference,
to be held this year in Indian Wells, Calif., October 29–31.
This year’s theme is “Controlling Chaos.” From
evolving methods of project delivery and shifting demographics to
the elusive influences of globalization and technology, significant
changes are affecting the local, national, and global design and
construction environment, the conference organizers report. The
magnitude and pace of these changes are creating a chaos that can
challenge even the most solid of practices.
Housing Awards Call for Entries
The entry fee deadline for the 2005 AIA Housing Awards is November
19, 2004. The submission deadline is December 17. The program emphasizes
the importance of housing as a necessity for life, sanctuary for
the human spirit, and valuable national resource, with awards in
four categories: single-family, multifamily, design innovation,
and community design. For more information, visit AIA.org.

Rome
Prize Applications Due November 1
The American Academy in Rome, established in 1894 and chartered
by an Act of Congress in 1905, sustains independent artistic pursuits
and humanistic studies. It is situated on the Janiculum, Rome’s
highest hill. Each year, through a national competition, the academy
awards the Rome Prize to 15 emerging artists (working in architecture,
landscape architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation,
literature, musical composition, or visual arts) and 15 scholars
(working in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and early Modern, or
Modern Italian studies). The application deadline is November
1. The Academy community also includes invited residents
and international affiliated fellows. For details, visit the Academy
online.
Correction
In last
week’s Project Watch, the architect credit was inadvertently
reversed. The design joint venture for Rinker Hall at the University
of Florida in Tampa is Croxton Collaborative/Gould Evans.
