Amid the Disarray of Katrina, We All Do What We Can
In the aftermath of the worst natural catastrophe in a U.S. city in memory, AIA leadership at the national, state, and local component levels are rallying immense collective effort to determine what is needed and what the AIA and its professional and industry partners can do. As we watch the good work of first responders such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army, already the AIA is joining architecture firms and many others across the country—reaching out to the hundreds of AIA members and emerging professionals in the Gulf region who have been displaced. The immediate goal is to match the needs of those in peril with all the resources the rest of us can make available. For more information, visit the AIA.org site, which is continually being updated.

City by the Bay Celebrates “Architecture and the City”
AIA SF hosts wealth of events geared to architects and architecture-aficionados
AIA San Francisco is hosting its second annual Architecture and the City series throughout the months of September and October. Cosponsored by the chapter and the new Center for Architecture + Design, whose mission is to encourage and enhance public education and civic discourse on architecture and design, the program celebrates the City by the Bay’s unique architectural heritage and active design community. Envisioned and organized in large part by local architects and community partners, the series will feature architectural home, restaurant, and studio tours; panel discussions; film screenings; exhibitions; and a sandcastle-building contest with teams of architects, engineers, and elementary school students.

Build San Francisco Institute Gives Students Real-World Perspective
A result of more than 10 years of work by the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco, the Build San Francisco Institute is a jointly funded partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District that brings rigorous and relevant design-related classes and field work to area high school students. Created in 2004, the Build San Francisco Institute grew from a small, summer mentorship program into a fully accredited half-day high school program.

Virginia School Raises the Roof in National Architecture Competition
When is an ugly house beautiful? For Don Pruett, Assoc. AIA, project manager at Samaha Associates in Fairfax, Va., an ugly house is a beautiful thing when it helps sixth-grade students get the hang of conceptual thinking in architecture. And one ugly house leads to award-winning design models for students at Hunters Woods Elementary school in Reston, Va.

Optimism, Pragmatism Keys to Successful Collaboration Between Architect and Developer
Southgate Market, with its parking solutions, exemplify relationship
Southgate Market’s neighborhood is a booming residential real estate market in Chicago’s South Loop area, with thousands of new condominiums, townhouses, and single-family homes. It comes as no surprise, then, that the developer chose one of the last undeveloped pieces of land in the former industrial area for a two-block-long shopping center project full of “big-box” brand-name retail tenants and parking . . . lots and lots of parking.

What Can You Do in a Blink?

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell (Little, Brown and Company, 2005)
At the turn of the millennium, many of us found it easy to embrace and adapt the underlying premise of Malcolm Gladwell’s first blockbuster, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. Tipping, still topping the charts as a best-selling paperback, explained the “social epidemic,” a set of circumstances that align to allow an object or a trend to achieve mass popularity. This year has brought us Gladwell’s second bestseller, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, which also reigns on the New York Times’ nonfiction bestsellers list. Blink presents case studies of some phenomenal decision makers, people who know in a blink of an eye the right choice to make.

International Nonprofit Reinforces Mission with Green Building
HOK’s new Winrock HQ earns Gold LEED™
One nonprofit organization has embraced green design as a means to underscore its mission. Founded by Winthrop Rockefeller, Winrock International “works with people around the world to increase economic opportunity, sustain natural resources, and protect the environment.” The new Winrock International headquarters building in Little Rock, designed by the New York City office of HOK, has just become the first office building in Arkansas, and only the second building there to receive the LEED™-Gold rating. Winrock’s headquarters is one of 70 buildings in the U.S. to attain Gold rating.

BEST PRACTICES in risk management
Drawing the Line
It may surprise some people to hear that the architect’s documents cannot be used for construction. Many are of the opinion that the architect prepares the documents and gives them to the contractor, and the contractor takes them and builds the building from the information contained therein. But nothing could be farther from the truth. James B. Atkins, FAIA, and Grant A. Simpson, FAIA, explain why.

“Forever Modern” Exhibition Celebrates 50 Years of Record Houses
Inaugural “AR 50” Award to be presented on September 7
“Forever Modern: 50 Years of Record Houses” at Pratt Manhattan Gallery presents innovative house designs, by more than 60 architects, that have shaped architecture during the last half century. Presented by Pratt Institute in collaboration with Architectural Record and McGraw-Hill Construction, the exhibition includes drawings, photographs, and some models of homes first featured in Architectural Record. The inaugural “AR 50 Award,” to be presented each year to architects on the anniversary of their work being featured in Record, will be presented at a September 7 reception at the gallery. The AIA is a partner-level sponsor of the event. Pratt Manhattan Gallery will feature the exhibition—free and open to the public—through September 16. For more information about the reception, contact Cynthia Gutierrez, 212-904-6390 or Cynthia_gutierrez@mcgraw-hill.com; for more information about the exhibition, visit Pratt’s Web site.
