H3
Modernizes Baseball Shrine to Enhance Visitor Experience
Baseball Hall of Fame undergoes major league reconstruction
Cooperstown, N.Y., rededicated its revered National Baseball
Hall of Fame and Museum July 29, after a two-year, $20-million reconstruction
overseen by H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture’s principal
Hugh Hardy, FAIA, with H3’s Jack Martin, AIA; Mario Censullo,
AIA; and Jonathan Strauss. Mindful of the treasures and traditions
contained within, the architects transformed the site’s seven
buildings into a single facility that gained 10,000 square feet of
exhibit space for 35,000 artifacts of the national pastime.
Dahlquist
and Lutzow Bestow 100th Scholarship
Dahlquist and Lutzow Architects Ltd. recently presented its 100th scholarship
to Chicago-area students pursuing undergraduate studies in accredited
architecture programs. Since 1997, D&L has offered the scholarships
to students who excel in pre-architectural studies and are enrolled
at one of the several local high schools at which the firm has worked.
With a large portion of their practice devoted to educational facilities,
Dahlquist and Lutzow conceived of the scholarship as a way to give
back to the community while fostering support for pre-architecture
programs in high schools.

Minnesota Component Executive Champions Architecture
Students and Community
Beverly Hauschild-Baron, Hon. AIA, executive vice president of AIA
Minnesota and recipient of the 1999 AIA National Service Award and
the 2005 University of Minnesota Outstanding Service Award, is a leader
in advancing the careers of up-and-coming architects. She has created
a strong allegiance to her alma mater, the University of Minnesota,
by becoming an advocate of the university’s College of Architecture
and Landscape Architecture (CALA). She has lobbied for new facilities
for the college and developed programs such as the Clarence Wigington
Scholarship for minority students and the Ellerbe Prize to shape young
architecture students. As Ed Kodet, FAIA, CALA National Advisory Board
chair, explains, “She’s an all-star.”
Thomasville Furniture Underwrites
Study for Hemingway’s Finca
Vígia
For the first time in its history, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s
2005 list of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places included a site outside the
U.S.: Ernest Hemingway’s hillside home near Havana. Finca
Vígia, meaning “Lookout Farm,” served as Hemingway’s
residence from 1939-1960 and is where he wrote his most famous works, including The
Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell
Tolls. Called by experts a “preservation
emergency,” the house suffers a range of structural problems and deterioration
from the elements. To safeguard the home, preservationists first must conduct
a feasibility study to determine the extent of the damage and formulate a restoration
plan. Thomasville Furniture Industries Inc., maker of the Ernest Hemingway Collection®,
announced July 26 that it will provide $20,000 to fund that research. For more
information, visit the National Trust’s Web site.

VDTA Rocks
with New Chicago Concert Pavilion
Daniel Burnham, in one of his not little plans, envisioned Northerly Island as
one of the northernmost points in a series of manmade islands. His dream for
this park embraced lagoons, harbors, beaches, recreation areas, a scenic drive,
and grand stretches of green space that would offer breathtaking views of the
lake and city skyline, according to the Chicago Park District. This summer, Valerio
Dewalt Train Architects, Chicago, harnessed this vision with the new Charter
One Pavilion, which plays host for 8,000 people to enjoy live music events. VDTA
designed the temporary structure to be disassembled and stored at the end of
each season over the three- to five-year contract between the Chicago Park District
and promoter Clear Channel Entertainment.

Brick Patterns Bring a Recladding Job
Together Visually and Structurally
Meany Hall for the Performing Arts in Seattle needed to be reclad with anchored
brick veneer. Existing conditions, such as shelf angles varying in height from
elevation to elevation and existing openings, meant careful layout of the new
grid. Hewitt-Isley and their consultants used a palette of brick patterns to
make it all work.
