What’s
Happening at the Convention This Year?
We understand that intriguing events are under development for members
attending the AIA 2005 National Convention and Design Exposition,
May 19–21, at Mandalay Bay
Convention Center in Las Vegas. We chose three to capture your fancy:
They involve an insiders’ conversation,
a luxe party, and a Gold Medal recipient. Interested?
Potomac Valley Chapter Honors
16 Projects
A jury of three AIA Hampton Roads (Va.) architects—Chair Stephen
Wright, AIA; Ahmed Hassan, AIA; and David Klemt, AIA—recently
selected the recipients of the 2004 Design Award Winners from the
Potomac Valley (Md.) Chapter. The jury awarded one Grand Honor Award,
three Honor Awards, four Merit Awards, and eight Citations.
Florida Students Design “Healthiest” Community
Behold Ektara, a tropical, solar-powered paradise and the winner of
the “Healthiest Community Award,” presented by the AIA
on February 23 to the eighth graders of Epiphany Catholic
School, Miami, for their entry in the 13th annual National Engineers
Week Future City Competition. Jurors Randy Byers, AIA, and Mark Maves,
AIA, selected the project as “the design that most contributes
to the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of the city’s
occupants.” AIA Board Member Marshall Purnell, FAIA, and Center
for Communities by Design Managing Director David Downey, Assoc.
AIA, presented the special award on February 23. The team from Epiphany
(students Gabriella DiCarlo, Alex Irastorza, and Carolina Ragolta;
assistant principal Sister Carmel Regina; and engineer Rodrigo O.
Rodriguez, PE, C3TS Consulting) took second place overall in the
national competition. Visit the Future Cities Web site.
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S
OFFICE
A Fine Accomplishment
In his monthly column, AIA President Douglas L Steidl, FAIA, reflects
on the words of New York City’s famous builder W.A. Starrett
and elaborates on the importance of collaboration among all team members
from a project’s inception.

ASAI Announces Winners of
the 20th Annual Architecture in Perspective Exhibition
The American Society of Architectural Illustrators is pleased to announce that
Chris Grubbs, San Francisco, has won the 20th Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize for
best in show. In a competition of nearly 500 illustrations from five continents,
Grubbs’ 7x5-inch drawing (prismacolor and watercolor on photocopy of pencil
on paper) for SOM of the Las Vegas Sands was chosen by the jury for its dramatic
texturing, vibrancy, and composition. Fifty-six drawings were selected for inclusion
in “Architecture in Perspective 20,” which will premier at the AIA
national headquarters gallery in Washington, D.C., on October 21. Ford Peatross,
Hon. AIA, curator of architectural drawings at the Library of Congress; Karen
Van Lengen, AIA, dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture; and
Richard Williams, AIA, Washington, D.C., served as this year’s jury. To
see more of the winning projects, visit the ASAI Web site.

College Encourages Healthy Living
Through Green Design
Recognizing that sustainability must equate with affordability to be
a viable building strategy, Toronto-based Young + Wright Architects
Inc. provided a strong business case for sustainability’s merits
for client Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). “This
isn’t only good stewardship. It’s good business,” says
Neil Munro, FRAIC, partner. “By framing a business case, we try
to educate our clients.”

Take Part
in the New Housing Design Trends Study
Sign up for the panel by March 15
The AIA Economics and Research and the Media Relations departments
invite you to participate in the new AIA Housing Design Trends
study, a research initiative to track and promote the architect’s
perspective on housing design trends. The study aims to put the
architect’s voice into media coverage of housing by identifying
these trends. As a panel member, you need only complete a quarterly
survey, which will not exceed 10 questions. In return, you will
receive an advance copy of the results and the potential opportunity
to participate in media interviews. Best of all, you will help
the AIA build awareness of residential architects and their role
in designing functional and inspirational homes. To participate,
sign up by March 15 and click
here. (Pictured

Call for Submissions:
Show You’re Green!
Entries due March 31
As part of a major, three-year initiative to demonstrate excellence
in affordable green housing design, the AIA Housing Knowledge Community
invites architects and developers to submit housing projects that
wholly or in part incorporate sustainable design features. Selected
projects will be showcased on the Affordable
Housing Design Advisor Web site, part of the Campaign
for Excellence in Affordable Housing Design supported by the Fannie
Mae Foundation in cooperation with many leading organizations,
including the AIA. Projects also will receive recognition at the
Housing Awards Reception in Las Vegas during the AIA 2005 National
Convention and Design Exposition, May
19–21. Visit the AIA
Housing Knowledge Community Web site for more information or
to submit your project. (Pictured is
