Ten Very Special People Tapped for Hon. AIA
The tenets of the Institute highlight the importance of communication and collaboration with our allies and clients throughout the building industry. One of the most important messages AIA members can share through our professional society is gratitude toward those who support and uplift architects and architecture; we can acknowledge them as part of the AIA family. In this spirit, the AIA is very pleased to bestow on 10 special people the title of Honorary AIA.

AIA Develops Leading Indicator for Construction Industry
New tool helps predict short-term trends in industry activities
AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA, and Economics and Market Research Director Diego Saltes report on development and use of the Architectural Billings Index (ABI), a leading indicator for activity in the construction industry. Developed using data gleaned from the Institute’s monthly Work-on-the-Boards survey of architecture firms’ project inquiries and billings, begun in 1995, the ABI gives us a good picture of construction activity about a year down the road.

Jersey City’s New Hospital Unites RBSD and Ballinger in a Long-Term Relationship
Facility and joint-venture are 20 years in the making
As a necessity, architects routinely form partnerships with other architects or firms in the interest of successful project delivery. Rarely, however, does the project and partnership last 20 years. Even more rarely do the partners still enjoy working together, but such is the case with the architects of the Jersey City Medical Center’s (JCMC) Wilzig Hospital: Arthur Blume, AIA, principal, RBSD, and Ed Jakmauh, AIA, principal, Ballinger.

But registration for convention activities isn’t the only thing you should nail down early to get exactly what you want. UNLV Senior Planner Jack Kelso, AIA, offers his tips on getting around town, eating out well, getting in some shopping, and catching a good show.

Shenandoah Valley Shows Its Stuff
New Graves-designed museum honors area history
Because of its remote location, the history of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is too often overlooked, but that’s about to change. On April 3, the Michael Graves & Associates-designed Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) will open to the public. The anchor of a cultural complex containing formal gardens and a historic house dating from the late 1700s, the new museum will tell the story of the “art, history, and culture of the great valley for which it is named.” The museum’s exhibits will explore the history of the valley, including its pre-European natives, role during the Civil War, and regional decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Architectural Graphic Standards Wants Details in All Categories
Beyond practical information and generic drawings that answer architects’ basic questions, the 11th edition of
Architectural Graphic Standards will offer innovative details and case studies intended to inspire excellence in both the performance and the poetics of building design. The new AGS will be organized around the UniFormat classification system; and the editors currently are searching for innovative details appropriate for inclusion in all eight sections: Substructure, Shell, Interiors, Services, Equipment and Furnishings, Special Construction and Demolition, Building Sitework, or details that incorporate universal design principles. Submit your detail by April 1 and you could become a prospective contributor to AGS and earn three learning units. See guidelines at AIA.org.
