What’s Happening at the Convention This Year?

Intriguing events are under development at the AIA’s 2005 National Convention and Design Exposition, May 19–21, at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Here is a sample.

Inside with the insiders: For openers, on Thursday evening, May 19, you can join Las Vegas legend Steve Wynn and developer Tony Marnell, Marnell Corrao, for a conversation about the future of Las Vegas and communities in general at their signature resort, Wynn Las Vegas. The newest resort on the Strip, the Wynn Las Vegas is slated to open this spring. By registering for A Conversation with Steve Wynn and Tony Marnell, (Event E25, free, but registration is required), you can learn from this insider’s view of the people who changed the landscape of Las Vegas, then enjoy the resort’s many dining and entertainment options.

Party, Las Vegas style: On Friday evening, May 20, sample the “high roller” lifestyle at the “Lucky in Las Vegas Host Chapter Party” at the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesar’s Palace. Experience world-class cuisine, cocktails, entertainment from the Strip’s top shows—Cirque du Soleil performers, celebrity impersonators, music, dancing, Las Vegas showgirls—scrumptious delicacies, sparkling libations delivered from fountains of ice, and a gaming experience at its fastest and finest.

Calatrava! The apex of architectural delight and thought is slated for Saturday afternoon, May 21, when AIA Gold Medal recipient Santiago Calatrava, FAIA, will deliver the closing session theme presentation. The architect/engineer/sculptor’s innovative forms reflect his philosophy that architecture is art. “If you step back in history, you will see that architecture has been considered art. If you study the history of art, you will find this pure understanding that architecture is an art,” Calatrava says.

With 150 continuing education workshops and seminars, 100 expo education programs and 800 exhibitors, 60 professional tours, and 50 special events, the AIA Convention and Expo is the place for design professionals to be this coming May. Register before April 15 and receive the $250 advance registration rate. After April 15, the full $295 registration fee will apply. Advance registration provides better access to workshops, tours, special events, programs, hotel accommodations, and airfares.
