Some
Parting Inspiration from Outgoing EVP/CEO
Norman L. Koonce, FAIA, looks back over his seven-year tenure as the
AIA’s chief executive and shares some insights gained as well
as visions of the future. There have been successes, surprises, and
challenges, most of which have been energizing, he says.
Young
Architects Honored—They
Are All Winners!
Wow. It’s been one year already? Each year, the AIA presents the Young
Architects Awards to professionals who have been licensed 10 years or fewer (regardless
of their age), shown exceptional leadership, and made significant contributions
to the profession early in their careers. This year’s six recipients
are impressive in their broad range of contributions. Are you ready to meet
them? And the winners are . . .
Diversity
and the Profession: Take II
Theodore Landsmark, Assoc. AIA, Boston Architectural
Center president and chief executive officer, and AIA Diversity
Committee Chair will receive The Whitney M. Young Jr. Award on
June 9 at the AIA 2006 national convention in Los Angeles. The
award is given in memory of the civil rights leader who at the
1968 AIA convention challenged architects to actively increase
attention to the inequities suffered by minorities. Here,
Landsmark, the 35th recipient of the award, speaks with AIArchitect about
diversity in the profession, the role of AIA and collateral organizations
in fostering diversity, and where we can go from here.
Exploring
Neuroscience
You Need to Know What You Don't
Know
John Eberhard, FAIA, has spent the last 10 years studying the rapidly expanding
field of neuroscience research, which explores the brain and how it develops
and provides the mind with material for our thoughts. In 2003, AIA San Diego
founded the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, for which Eberhard served
as the first president and directed its subsequent involvement. This year, Eberhard
will write a monthly series of articles that discuss these exciting developments
in neuroscience and how they relate to architecture. Join him for his inaugural
article as he explores this new territory—our journey begins in the Cathedral
of Amiens.
From the President’s office
21st Century Leadership: Sharing (not Losing) Control
“I used to think leadership meant being the person in command and control. As
the oldest of four siblings, being the leader often meant taking responsibility
for the welfare of others (whether I wanted to or not), and having loyal followers
(whether they wanted to or not),” says AIA President Kate Schwennesen,
FAIA. She explains how experience has taught her that leadership means sharing,
not losing, control.
GOOD DESIGN GRACES TWO GULF
STATES
Three Firms Capture AIA Louisiana’s 2005
Awards
AIA Louisiana presented its prestigious Honor and Merit Awards for architectural
excellence to seven projects late last year. Waggonner & Ball Architects,
New Orleans, won all three Honor Awards and one of four Merit Awards. The other
firms to win Merit Awards are Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, of New Orleans, and Ledbetter
Fullerton Architects, also of New Orleans. AIA Louisiana also honored outgoing
President Trula Remson, AIA, with the President’s Medal and Certificate
for outstanding service to the AIA and profession of architecture.
AIA Alabama Honors Nine
AIA Alabama honored nine building projects as outstanding examples of architecture
during the chapter’s 2005 Design Awards presentation, part of the chapter’s
annual awards gala, held in Birmingham late last year. From a group of 37 statewide
entries, a Birmingham jury awarded five Awards of Merit and two Honor Awards.
Additionally, members of AIA Alabama chose a recreational farmhouse to receive
the 2005 Members Choice Award, and the Alabama Masonry Institute presented
its Top Block Award to a new “old” high school.

Substantial Completion, Where Art Thou?
Substantial completion—the Holy Grail of every project—is
not an issue to be taken lightly. It is an occasion that demands
accuracy, compliance, and fair dealing that brings with it many
risks. This month, James Atkins, FAIA, and Grant Simpson, FAIA,
explore the realities of substantial completion, the associated
risks contained within it, the all-too-common ruthlessness that
accompanies it, and the opportunities to guard against these risks
and rise above the claims and financial penalties that are its
occasional companions.
Heads Up: COD, COTE Present “The Architecture
of Sustainability,” May 4–7
Conference to be held in Shepherdstown. W.Va.
Join the AIA Committee on Design and the Committee on the Environment as they
team up to present “The Architecture of Sustainability” conference,
May 4–7, at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown,
W.Va. The conference will employ a variety of venues—educational sessions,
panel discussions, and tours—to allow participants to explore the effect
of sustainability on both the art of architecture and the science of building.
Come, examine the process of integrated design and how it makes better buildings,
and earn up to 18 learning units to boot! For the full conference agenda or to
register online, visit the COD Web site.

Did you know . . .
The number of attendees at the 54th AIA national convention, held in Washington,
D.C., in 1921, had risen to an all-time Institute high of 200, necessitating
for the first time parallel sessions to meet a variety of interests among
the architecturally inclined. The 2005 AIA national convention in Las Vegas,
the largest in the Institute’s history, hosted 24,444 registrants
and 150 continuing-education sessions for the architecturally inclined. Will
you be part of history at the 2006 convention, June 8–10 in Los Angeles?
