AIA Tennessee Honors 16 Projects
Sixteen projects waltzed away with design awards at the AIA Tennessee’s 2005 annual meeting and convention in Nashville. The international jury, chaired by Brian Ambroziak, and including Salvatore Canciello, AIA, Sasaki Associates, Boston; Jon Coddington, AIA, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.; and Sigismund Sliwinski, Sliwinski Lenschow Architekten, Berlin, Germany, deliberated over 80 submittals, recognizing those with the most outstanding design.

1887–1896: A Decade of Outreach, Inclusiveness, and Internationalism
Join architectural historian Tony Wrenn, Hon. AIA, as he explores the Institute’s fourth decade, which witnessed inclusion of its first woman member, a consolidation of the country’s two major architects’ societies, formal recognition by our British peers, and a fair the likes of which had never been seen before.

Deck the Walls on a Budget
Do you have big, blank walls in your building that need some spicing up? Digital technology might be able to help. Large-scale, computer-generated murals can now be produced, and reproduced, in a timely and budget-conscious fashion. Facilities such as offices, hotels, bookstores, hospitals, restaurants, and banks can fill large, interior open areas with art that meets both size requirements and creative themes.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
Listening Before the Leap

Newly inaugurated AIA President Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, took a precious quiet moment in the lull before the new year to reflect on the Institute and her responsibility to “listen like never before to what architects are saying about practice, education, the shape of the profession, the AIA, and the world our profession serves.”

‘The Building Building’ Celebrates Its Silver Anniversary
Once upon a time, a dedicated committee presented a proposal to Congress for a National Museum of the Building Arts. The proposal, titled “The Building Building,” outlined an institution dedicated to exploring and celebrating the built environment. That was 1978. Two years after the proposal, Congress chartered the National Building Museum. In 2005, the National Building Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since opening its doors in 1980, approximately 400,000 visitors annually have, as predicted, arrived to appreciate architecture.

HGA Merges Victorian and Modern at Como Park Visitor and Education Center
So famous is the 1915 Victorian Como Park conservatory as a type, that if you look in many editions of Webster’s under greenhouse, you’ll find a picture of the historic building, says HGA Architects and Engineers Project Lead Designer Kara Hill, PhD, AIA. Hill says the HGA team took its cues for the new Modern Visitor and Education Center for the Como Park Zoo and adjacent Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in St. Paul from the way plants follow the sun, particularly crucial in the Minnesota climate. “It’s that phototropic quality that I think is unusual in our project,” she says.

BEST PRACTICES
I Take Thee, for Better or for Worse . . .
As if regretting a poor prenuptial agreement, business partners often find themselves engaged in costly disputes because of a nonexistent or badly negotiated contract. Business marriages—usually built on respect, optimism, and trust—fall apart for myriad reasons, including lack of leadership, unclear roles and responsibilities, clashing cultures, poor client management, and failure to respond quickly to problems. Absent the goodwill that accompanies the romance stage, business divorces get emotional and ugly when one party perceives that its financial or professional interests are threatened: client custody fights, anxious employees, division of assets and liabilities, betrayals, tarnished reputations, public relations battles, and attorneys’ fees. To avoid costly disputes, Michael Strogoff, AIA, offers some important guidelines for negotiating a joint venture or strategic alliance agreement.

That in 1990, during the AIA National Convention in Houston, the Institute and the USSR Union of Architects signed the AIA/USSR Union of Architects Accord on Professionalism that provided means for representatives of each organization to attend the other’s conventions and work together to advance the work of the UIA? Shown in this AIA Memo photo signing the accord are 1990 AIA President Sylvester Damianos, FAIA (left) and USSR Union of Architects President Yuri P. Platenov, surrounded by former AIA presidents (left to right) Robert M. Lawrence, FAIA; Charles E. Schwing, FAIA; John M. McGinty, FAIA; S. Scott Ferebee Jr., FAIA; and George M. Notter Jr., FAIA.
