Yes,
Virginia, There Are Eight Award-winning Architecture Projects!
The Virginia Society of the AIA paid tribute November 4 to eight projects with
Awards for Excellence in Architecture, ranging from an elegant, steel-and-glass
row house addition in Washington, D.C., to an environmentally conscious elementary
school on a sensitive site in suburban Henrico County, Va. Bostonians Kyu Sung
Woo, FAIA, and Jonathan Levi, FAIA, joined Jury Chair William Rawn, FAIA, to
make their selections from a pool of 130 submissions.
James
Ingo Freed, FAIA, 1930–2005
Architect James Ingo Freed, longtime partner of the internationally acclaimed
Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, New York City, died in his Gramercy Park home
on December 15 from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was 75 years old.
Perhaps best known as the lead designer of the National Holocaust Museum in
the nation’s capital, Freed also was a noted housing and office building
designer, as well as recipient of one of the AIA’s inaugural Thomas Jefferson
Awards for Public Architecture in 1992.
In
Memory: Donald Canty, Hon. AIA, 1929–2005
Donald J. Canty, Hon. AIA—architecture
critic, editor, and mentor for half a century—died December
14 in Seattle. He was 76 years old. In the early part of his career,
Canty was editor of Western
Architect and Engineer. In 1963, when
that magazine was merged with Architectural
Record, he came to
the AIA in Washington, D.C., to serve as communications coordinator
for a short while before accepting the managing editor position
at Architectural Forum in
New York City. He returned to Washington, D.C., in 1967 to create City magazine
for Urban America Inc., which later became the publication of the
National Urban Coalition. Although not an architect, he was an
ardent believer in the absolute importance of a cohesive urban
fabric. With a BA in philosophy at Santa Clara University in his
native California and MA in journalism from Northwestern University,
his insight into architecture came from his humanistic perspective.
Good
to Be Green: USGBC Honors Leadership Award Recipients
The U.S. Green Building Council honored its 2005 Leadership Awards recipients—who
include a number of architects and architecture firms—on November 10
in Atlanta at its annual conference. The Greenbuild Conference & Expo drew
more than 5,000 attendees involved in the burgeoning green building movement.
The awards recognized excellence in green design and construction. Each Leadership
Award category recognized one organization and one individual. The awards were
presented in the categories of community, education, LEED™, organizational
excellence, research, and advocacy.
Programming
Blog Offers Information-sharing Loop in Pre-design Stage and Beyond
When George Mason University’s Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study,
in Fairfax, Va., needed to add 12,500 square feet of laboratory to its existing
25,000-square-foot higher education facility, the request for proposals generated
by the university’s planning department—in accordance with university
standards—contained typically prescriptive information about the proposed
addition. Given the competitive nature of the university-chosen design-build
delivery method, the three competing architect/contractor teams did not have
much opportunity to research the Krasnow Institute’s existing culture
and its use of space. Thus, the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture undertook
an independent programming study to increase user input to inform the teams’ respective
designs and bid packages.

The Urban Glass House: Modern Luxury
Johnson’s Modernism comes to SoHo
In the wake of Philip Johnson’s death this year at the age of 98, the
final residential building of his career has begun construction in tribute
to his most iconic piece. The Urban Glass House, designed and named by Johnson
and partner Alan Ritchie, of Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects, New York
City, is a 12-story glass-and-steel structure offering 40 residences in SoHo.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2006, in conjunction with the 100th
anniversary of Johnson’s birth. To design the interior spaces of this
Modernist building, the developers turned to Annabelle Selldorf, AIA, of Selldorf
Architects LLC, New York City.

BEST
PRACTICES
Risk Management Beyond Your Home Base
Multi-jurisdictional practice—practicing in states other than “home
base”—presents specific risk concerns to the architect. Because
laws governing professional practice vary among jurisdictions, it is wise to
determine well in advance what you can and cannot do in another state or territory
before you so much as hand out a business card there. Consultant Judy Busch
offers a checklist of related considerations.
AIA Officer Nominations Open; Filing Date
