Slower Growth Marks Architecture Firm
Business Conditions in June
Services provided by firms broaden but
remain concentrated in design-phase activities
June marked the sixth straight month that U.S. architecture firms
reported increased billings, reports AIA Chief Economist Kermit
Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. Though the growth was stronger earlier in
the year, the gains in recent months are still healthy. In June,
21 percent of firms reported a substantial rise in billings over
May levels, while 14 percent reported a substantial decline. These
figures are very similar to those reported last month.
MIT
Building Looks Into
Technological Future
Reason has it that an academic building housing the MIT Computer
Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the Laboratory
for Information and Decision Systems, and the Department of Linguistics
and Philosophy with some of the best and brightest students, researchers,
and instructors in America should be a “smart” building.
And the Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information, and
Intelligence Sciences, by Gehry Architects with associate architect
Cannon Design, fits the bill.
Member Suspended for Violating AIA Code
of Ethics
In accordance with procedures set forth in Chapter 8 of the Institute’s
Bylaws, the National Ethics Council (“NEC”) has ordered
the suspension of AIA Architect member Alfred De Vido from membership
in The American Institute of Architects for four years for violating
Rules 2.101 and 2.104 of the Institute’s Code of Ethics and
Professional Conduct.
National

Buckminster
Fuller:
Yet Another Stamp on the Planet
Fifty years after R. Buckminster Fuller, FAIA, patented his Geodesic
dome, the U.S. Postal Service has issued a commemorative stamp honoring
the brilliant American inventor, philosopher, architect, and engineer.
Released on July 12, the stamp features the Boris Artzybasheff painting
of “Bucky” with his head in the pattern of a Geodesic
dome that originally appeared on the cover of Time
magazine on January 10, 1964. Also depicted are a number of his
other inventions, most notably the Dymaxion Car and the 4D House.
