TWA Corporate Headquarters Rockets to New Use
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in November of 2002, four years ahead of its 50th anniversary, the TWA Corporate Headquarters Building in Kansas City is the first Modern building to be renovated using State of Missouri and Federal Historic Tax Credits. A primary goal of the project team was to preserve the spirit of the original building while seeking to further modernize a classic Modern building. The firm, el dorado inc., principal David Dowell, AIA, tells us, received a 2007 Merit Award from AIA Kansas City as well as accolades from other organizations.

Pfeiffer Architects Helps Washington State U Renovate Its Student Union Building and Pursue LEED Accreditation
Stephanie Kingsworth, AIA, LEED-AP, an associate with Pfeiffer Architects, tells us that the Compton Union Building (CUB) project began with the question: “What do you do with a mid-century Modern student center at the heart of a university campus that just doesn’t function well anymore?” Over the course of 50+ years, the 240,000-gross-square-foot building had suffered from numerous expansions, internal remodels, and the addition of new programmatic elements, all of which resulted in a building with muddled architectural clarity that had turned into a rat’s maze on the interior. Read about how Pfeiffer Associates undertook its renovation.

Four Buildings Under the Gun
AIArchitect received four intriguing essays each arguing in favor of the preservation of a different Modern building, each located in a different city. The four structures sit on the bubble of being razed, preserved, or neglected, while ongoing efforts from various parties look at preservation and restoration options for each structure.
