Housing Has a New Face
New report by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies points to larger role for women and minorities in housing’s future
Despite job losses in the rest of the economy, housing had another record-breaking year in 2003. Home sales, single-family housing starts, residential fixed investment, homeownership rates, mortgage originations, refinances, and home prices all reached new peaks. The only weak spots were the uneven rental market and the depressed manufactured-housing sector.

NJ Selects Frederic Schwartz for State 9/11 Memorial
Frederic Schwartz, AIA, on July 6 was named the architect for the New Jersey September 11 Memorial, to be located at the water’s edge in Liberty State Park opposite the World Trade Center site. A design jury of 11 family members and New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey announced the decision at Victory Theater of New Jersey Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark. McGreevey spoke of the “common purpose” arising from the legacies of the nearly 700 New Jersey residents lost and introduced Schwartz as “an architect of incredible vision, thought, and majesty.”

A Loss Cause (Part II)
There is a growing tendency among owners and contractors to believe that all discrepancies, errors, and omissions committed by a design professional are actionable offenses. As The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice states, however, “It is important that all parties understand that construction documents are not intended to be a complete set of instructions on how to construct a building.”

Let the Public Know How Much Pro Bono Work Architects Do
Public Architecture, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, is seeking images, profiles, and case studies of projects completed pro bono for an up-and-coming Web site dedicated to work in the public interest. Public Architecture’s “1% Solution” program has a goal of encouraging firms to devote one percent of working hours (a modest 20 hours/person/year) to matters of public interest. Were all 240,000 architecture professionals in the U.S. to sign on, the collective resources would be the equivalent of a 2,500-person firm (the largest in the world) working full time for the public good, totaling an estimated 5 million hours annually. Contact John Cary, executive director, by email [jcary@publicarchitecture.org] or phone, 415-861-8200, for more information.
