AIA
Considers Education Policies for K–12, Professional Degrees,
Professional Development
Over the past year, the Board Education Strategic Issue Group has
examined the Board’s positions regarding the current state
of architecture education and the AIA’s role in influencing
a preferred future for education. These thorough investigations
culminated in the preparation of 13 new public policies on architecture
education, which are now available for comment.
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
Lessons
From Atticus Finch
Recently, the American Film Institute (AFI) selected the top 100
heroes and villains (50 each) in the AFI’s 100-year history.
Among the 50 contending good guys were Indiana Jones, Rocky Balboa,
Robin Hood, Superman, and Moses. Trumping them all, however—even
Moses—was Atticus Finch, the deeply principled and unassuming
small-town lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird,
played by recently deceased Gregory Peck.
He’s
Not a Monster Architect, But He Plays One on TV
Discovery Channel program features Todd
Erlandson, AIA
The show isn’t as menacing as the name would imply, at least
not for the viewers. It’s a different story for the homeowners
who place their trust and the keys of their homes into the hands
of energetic and telegenic host Steve Wilson, a.k.a. Monster Foreman,
and the contractors who will turn a home into a themed environment—perhaps
a racecar, an English castle, or even a tropical oasis—in
five days. An important link to homeowner happiness is Todd Erlandson,
AIA, a consultant who helps conceptualize each Monster House scenario.
KU
Community Partnerships Program Takes NCARB Prize
Studio 804 Inc., a University of Kansas affiliated program that
emphasizes community partnerships and design excellence, will receive
the 2003 NCARB Prize for Creative Integration of Practice and Education
along with a $25,000 grand prize purse. The prize recognizes efforts
to link education and practice creatively.
Six
From the South Receive Top Honors
Members of the AIA Gulf States Region—from Alabama, Arkansas,
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee—proudly celebrated six
fine buildings and their architects during their regional reception
at the AIA national convention in May. A jury, chaired by internationally
acclaimed architect Steven Holl, FAIA, and composed of members of
his firm, examined 80 projects and chose the following to receive
awards.
