AIA,
CSI, NIBS Agree to New Version 3.0 of National CAD Standard in 2004
Representatives of the AIA, Construction Specifications Institute,
and the National Institute of Building Sciences have signed an agreement
for publication and distribution of the U.S. National CAD Standard
(NCS) that will lead to the release of Version 3.0 of NCS in early
2004 as well as continued development and publication of the product.
The NCS is a standard for organizing and classifying computer-aided
drawings and other design (CAD) data intended to streamline communication
among designers, building owners, constructors, and facility managers.
FROM
THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
Architecture: The Healing Art
AIA President Thompson E. Penney, FAIA, discusses “the meticulous
craftsmanship and the brilliant marriage” between the Salk
Institute and its site overlooking the Pacific and the power of
architecture to enrich and elevate the human spirit. He wonders:
Just as the work of dedicated physicians transformed the quality
of life in the 20th century, might architects and design have a
similar transformational impact in the 21st century?
Glass
Act: Japanese Project Wins DuPont Benedictus Award
Koichi Yasuda, Ken Kannari, and Masao Nishioka of Nikken
Sekki, Tokyo, received the 2003 DuPont Benedictus Award for innovation
in architectural design using laminated glass for their Pola Museum
of Art in Hakone-Machi, Japan. The glass, in the form of a transparent,
sloped skylight, serves as the primary architectural feature of
a museum that houses a private collection of Impressionist paintings.
AIA
Seattle Holds Warm Reception for Honorees
On a warm June evening, following a rare 90-degree day in Seattle,
the heroes and heroines of the Puget Sound design community gathered

year's rich crop of national and local honors. AIA Seattle President-elect
Kristen M. Scott, AIA, standing in for President Rena M. Klein,
AIA, welcomed some 120 attendees to the 13th annual Honors Gala,
held at the historic Four Seasons Olympic Hotel in Seattle.
Penney Named Honorary Aussie Architect
AIA President Thompson E. Penney, FAIA, received an honorary fellowship

Cutting Costs: Employee-benefits
costs continue to rise. There are ways to control that and still
maintain an enticing benefits package. Economy:
Tax and interest-rate cuts should show positive results in the coming
half of 2003. Tech: Linux PC may
be cheaper than Windows for computing-intensive work.

Considerations for Undertaking Residential
Design/Build
With interest rates low and likely to go lower, the housing market
is still running strong. Some reasonably well-capitalized architecture
firms have taken advantage of this trend by leading residential
design/build projects. The Architect’s
Guide to Design-Build Services explains what one needs to
consider before taking the first steps into this risky yet potentially
very profitable enterprise.

My
Architect, Myself Explores Louis
Kahn Through His Son’s Eyes
Louis Kahn’s personal life and architecture get a new look
in the film My Architect, Myself
by Nathaniel Kahn, son of the AIA Gold Medal winner, and Harriet
Pattison, a landscape architect in Kahn’s office. Nathaniel
narrates this effort to better understand his father and his works,
which include the Salk Institute and the Kimbell Museum. He also
interviews his father’s contemporaneous practitioners, including
Frank Gehry, Philip Johnson, and I.M. Pei, as well as his own mother
and two half-sisters. The film debuted in March and is being distributed
by New Yorker films. Read an interview with Nathaniel Kahn, which
was published in Architectural Record.
