Polshek Partnership Restores a Kahn Landmark at Yale
Polshek Partnership Architects, New York City, has renovated and restored The Yale University Art Gallery, Louis I. Kahn’s first significant commission and considered by many to be his first masterpiece. The Modern building, a recipient of the AIA Twenty-five Year Award and the first of its genre on the Neo-Gothic Ivy League campus, reopened last month in New Haven.

Nevada’s Only Fully Accredited, Freestanding Cancer Center Opens
To provide comprehensive cancer treatment services to area residents, Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Foundation recently opened the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. Designed by the Sacramento, Calif., office of HGA Architects and Engineers, the $12-million, 34,000-square-foot facility is Nevada’s only freestanding cancer center fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Located on five acres of a new 85-acre Carson Tahoe Medical Campus, the cancer center houses 20 chemotherapy and infusion positions—each with a full view of the Eagle Valley. HGA‘s two-story structure, with entrances at both levels, centers on hospitality and nature. The exterior features stone native to Nevada and skylights in the waiting areas. Large stone fireplaces grace the arrival spaces on both floors, and the building offers a labyrinth for meditation, outdoor patient areas, and a riparian habitat. In addition to the cancer center, the new campus will house a medical center, surgical hospital, hospitality facility, and medical offices. (Photo courtesy of HGA).

Kudos Abound in the Bluegrass State
AIA Kentucky recognized six projects with Awards for Excellence in Architectural Design in the 2006 AIA Kentucky Honor Awards Program during ceremonies on November 3, 2006, at AIA Kentucky’s annual convention in Covington, Ky. “We were delighted with the range of building types, programs, use of materials, and tectonic systems represented in the 33 projects reviewed. There was a strong showing of higher-education related designs, indicating a successful and established collaboration between the colleges/universities and their design teams,” the jury noted. The chapter also presented seven Awards of Recognition.
