Steel Prices Stabilizing—At Higher Levels
The good news, according to steel-manufacturer representatives, is that steel prices have hit their peak and will stabilize by mid-summer. The bad news: Prices will stabilize at about $500 per tonne for hot-rolled steel and will stay that high for at least the next three years. China is the biggest steel consumer now, and India could be next, possibly shifting the trade balance for the rest of the century.

CAJ Singles Out 43 Projects for Justice Facilities Review

The projects and their architects will be published in August 2004 and become part of a traveling exhibit that will tour the country throughout the year.

Kahn’s Yale Gallery to Undergo Renovation
The Yale University Art Gallery, originally designed by AIA Gold Medalist Louis I. Kahn, is undergoing a restoration of its landmark main building under the guidance of James Polshek, FAIA; Richard Olcott, FAIA; and Duncan Hazard, AIA, of New York City-based Polshek Partnership Architects. The gallery, the oldest college museum in the Western Hemisphere, was Kahn’s first significant commission, and is considered by many to be his first masterpiece.

Win-Win Ecology: Food for Architects’ Thoughts
Author suggests ways to save wild species
“There is still time,” author Michael L. Rosenzweig, PhD, notes in his upbeat book Win-Win Ecology: How the Earth’s Species Can Survive in the Midst of Human Enterprise (Oxford University Press, 2003), to implement solutions that work for our environment at the same time they work for business interests. Rosenzweig’s approach of “reconciliation ecology,” which he explains is the “science of inventing, establishing, and maintaining new habitats to conserve species diversity in places where people live, work, or play,” doesn’t presume that we should surrender our creature comforts or turn back progress that already has been made through conservation and restoration. Rather, the author says, we can share our spaces through cooperation, planning, and, sometimes, happy accident.

The (Northern) Sky’s the Limit
Aurora borealis inspires railroad
depot in Anchorage

The Alaska Railroad Bill Sheffield Depot, designed by San Francisco-based KMD (Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz) with Kumin Associates Inc., is a $28 million award-winning showcase with high-tech appeal that interprets people’s fascination with the spectacular aurora borealis, or northern lights. More than a passenger depot, the Modern rail station provides a new example of destination architecture, supporting Alaska’s vision of being a world-class place to be, the architects report.

An Owner’s Guide for Negotiating Fees and Agreements With Design Professionals
Owners and design professionals share many of the same goals when negotiating an agreement, says Michael Strogoff, AIA, Negotiating Strategies publisher. Yet many negotiations end up as a series of contentious battles. Strogoff offers guidelines to help owners achieve their overall project goals and avoid these battles. The tips are helpful for architects, too.

AAF Exhibit Examines the Aesthetic of Aerospace Engineering
AIA Gold Medalist Frank Gehry, FAIA, likes to point out that his undulating metal-clad designs would not have been possible without aerospace engineering software. And it’s undeniable that in the world of supersonic flight, where materials are invented and forms devised to overcome complex fluid physics, function and form are inseparable and often inspiringly beautiful. Thus, the American Architectural Foundation features “Aerospace Design: The Art of Engineering From NASA’s Aeronautical Research” at the Octagon in Washington, D.C., April 20–December 5, 2004. The exhibit, co-organized by The Art Institute of Chicago and Aerospace Technology Enterprise of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, features 65 historic artifacts, including wind-tunnel models, and showcases some of the latest research for developing future aircraft with morphing wings, self-healing skins, and biologically inspired sensors. For more details, visit the AAF Web site. Color streaks show this wind-tunnel model riding a sonic wave. Photo courtesy NASA.
