EPIConnection Presents Competition for Students and Young Professionals
Design a 21st-century live/work studio for fame and glory (and cash prizes)

EPIConnection.com, the AIA National Housing Committee, and the Whirlpool Corporation are teaming up to sponsor the Emerging Professionals Guest House/Studio Design Competition to encourage and recognize the design skills of emerging architecture professionals. The award-winning projects will receive significant recognition and cash awards, and finalists will become part of a case study demonstrating cooperative projects among industry, schools, and professional practice.

Eligibility—This is an international competition open to two categories of entrants.

  • Category 1 is for students in at least their fourth year of school
  • Category 2 is for intern candidates—those currently studying to take the ARE, non-licensed design professionals, and AIA Associate members—and young architects (those licensed 10 years or less).

Challenge
The competition challenges emerging professionals and architecture students to design a 21st century live/work studio by renovating a 1920s Bungalow-style residence in Albuquerque. The program also includes conversion of a single-family-house garage into a multiuse space for extended family members or as a future rental property for supplemental income.

Winning entries will be used as case studies by the sponsors in a national campaign to promote cooperative ventures among education, industry, and practice.

Prizes

  • First Prize: $2,000 each to one student and one emerging professional
  • Second Prize: $500 each to one student and one emerging professional
  • Six Honorable Mentions—to three students and three emerging professionals—also will be awarded.

Jury—Members of the jury include:

  • Cathy L. Hendricks, ASID, IIDA, executive director, Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, Austin
  • Mark Johnson, FAIA, Whirlpool Corporation, Benton Harbor, Mich.
  • John Klockeman, AIA, principal, Blumentals Architects Inc., Brooklyn Center, Minn.
  • Andy Pressman, FAIA, School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
  • David H. Newton, David Newton Associates, Knoxville.

Entries—Entries will consist of drawings, renderings, and a 250-word written project statement mounted on two 24x36-inch boards.

Timetable—Registrations and entry fees are due October 1 in Washington, D.C., and submissions are due October 18 at AIA New Mexico in Albuquerque. Winners will be notified by November 12.
