Committee
on the Environment Chooses This Year’s Top Ten Green Projects
To mark Earth Day 2004, April 22, the AIA and its Committee on the
Environment selected 10 examples of green design that protect and
enhance the environment. The selected projects address environmental
challenges with designs that integrate architecture, technology,
and natural systems. The top 10 projects will be honored in June
at the AIA National Convention in Chicago.
AIA, Architectural Society
of China Sign Professional Accord
The AIA and the Architectural Society of China (ASC) signed a new
and revised Accord on Professionalism
in Architecture April 14. The accord was signed in Beijing
by AIA President Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA, and ASC President Song
Chunhua, Hon. AIA. The accord extends the longstanding friendship
and cooperation agreement between the two professional societies,
which began on June 17, 1993.

WATCH
Is This Profession Going to the Dogs?
You bet it is, thanks to Hull (Mass.) Seaside Animal Rescue, which
held its first Barkitecture Show and Auction last month. The event
featured 20 custom-built doghouses designed by area architects and
fetched more than $30,000 dollars for the group, which is seeking
to build a permanent shelter for homeless animals. Shown here is
Mostue and Associates’ “Pug-oda,” which raised
$950 and placed in the “People’s Chews Awards.”

Shipping: Warehouses may be passé
as transportation technology brings products directly to consumers.
Software: Renting is saving businesses
big money. The economy: Expect
raw-materials prices to increase through 2006 and stay high.
AIArchitect offers AIA members exclusive access to three
stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for
the coming year. Nonmembers

Lessons Learned From the COTE Top 10
One of the hottest developing principles in building design is environmental
sensitivity. And one of the toughest aspects to sell to clients
is that the expectation will live up to the reality. Here, derived
from a “lessons learned” section required of the COTE
Top 10 submissions is the unvarnished truth about the challenges
and successes of designing for two demanding clients: the owner
and the environment.

Thinking of Running for Office?
New program addition: campaign training
seminar to be offered June 9
The AIA Government Advocacy Team will sponsor a special Political
Campaign Training Seminar for AIA members and guests who are considering
running for public office or assisting a candidate. The seminar
will take place in Chicago, Wednesday, June 9, 1–6 p.m., the
day before the convention officially kicks off.
Explore
the Tipping Point—Transforming the American Learning Environment
The coming decade likely will see more schools built or modernized
than have been completed in the past 40 years. Will we simply create
more schools, or will we envision more powerful ways and places
to engage children in learning? The
AIA Committee on Architecture for Education, partnering with
visionary educators May 13–15 in Portland, Ore., will explore
and identify key characteristics that programs and environments
need to meet the challenges of American schools. For information,
visit the conference Web page on AIA.org.
Be Part of the NAAB Accreditation
Teams
The AIA is seeking practitioners to participate in National Architectural
Accrediting Board visits to schools of architecture. Nominations
will be for a four-year term, 2005–2008. If you understand
and appreciate architecture education issues and the link between
education and practice, please submit a letter of interest and one-page
resume no later than May 15 to
Catherine Roussel, AIA, croussel@aia.org.
Nominees will participate in a June 10 orientation at the AIA convention
in Chicago and make one five-day school visit each year in February
or March. Spanish speakers are needed, and diversity among team
members is desired. For more information, call 202-626-7417.
