WORK-ON-THE-BOARDS
2005 Off to a Great Start for Firms

AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA, tells us that U.S. architecture firms reported another strong upturn in business conditions in February, coming on top of a surprisingly strong January. Fully a third of firms indicated that February billings exceeded January levels by 5 percent or more, while only 14 percent noted a decline. Larger firms were particularly enthusiastic about business conditions, with a third reporting gains and only 4 percent indicating declines. Additionally, the panel reported increased and increasing use of design-build for project delivery, along with its pros and cons.

AIA Housing Knowledge Community Honors 8 Residential Designs
Eight projects will receive 2005 AIA Housing Awards, established by the AIA Housing Committee knowledge community to emphasize the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable national resource. Jurors Edward M. Hord, FAIA (chair); Donna Kacmar, AIA; Jane Kolleeny; Jonathan S. Segal, FAIA; and Gina Van Tine, AIA, selected the award recipients from 106 submissions. The recipients will be recognized May 20 at the AIA 2005 National Convention and Design Expo in Las Vegas.

New AIA Design-Build Documents Now Available in AIA Software
D-B documents join seven others released in 2004
The much-anticipated revamping of the AIA’s new family of design-build contract documents released in December 2004 is now available in AIA Contract Documents software. The 2004 design-build documents—which replace the set premiered in 1986 and last revised in 1996—introduce several new directions in design-build delivery that provide great flexibility in how a given design-build project is to be delivered; make clear the responsibilities of all parties; and fairly balance the interests of the owner, design-builder, architect (who may or may not be the design-builder), and independent consultants to the owner.

University at Buffalo/SUNY Wins $25,000 NCARB Prize
The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) announced March 9 that it has named the University at Buffalo/The State University of New York (SUNY) as the grand prize winner of the 2005 NCARB Prize. With this honor, the University at Buffalo Department of Architecture will receive $25,000. In the University of Buffalo’s entry, “West Side Streetscape/Small Built Works Project,” more than 120 undergraduates and graduate students have created numerous projects within the framework of civic improvement.

AIA Announces Education Honor Awards Recipients
Teaching faculty recognized for innovative courses
The AIA announced the recipients of the 2005 AIA Education Honor Awards for excellence in course development and teaching of architecture at the March 4 annual meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). The Education Honor Awards program, now in its 16th year, recognizes collegiate faculty achievements and contributions to education and the discipline of architecture. The awards were conferred officially during the ACSA Awards Ceremony at its annual meeting in Chicago.

Reading Roberto in D.C.
The AIA Store’s Jerry Pollard reads the tale of Roberto the Insect Architect, by Nina Laden (Chronicle, 2000), to a group of aspiring young architects and their teachers from a daycare center near the national component headquarters. The reading event took place March 9 and included AIA-hosted juice and cookies to go with the story of a heroic bug who helps his fellow insects by designing communities full of wonderful buildings that suit their particular needs. A good time was had by all (especially Jerry). If you’re in the nation’s capital, be sure to stop by the AIA national component headquarters, say hi, and see the store. Or visit the AIA Store online to check out the wide range of architecture-related books and toys for kids.

AIA Officer Nominations Open; Filing Date Is March 18
Ten architects have declared their candidacy for three national AIA offices.

Vegas Airport Growing in Leaps and Bounds
AIA convention-goers will have an easier time going through Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport now that expansion and new technologies have eased terminal congestion and made flying in and out a smoother experience. Construction and technology projects were divided into five phases at a cost of $1.8 billion, and are all expected to be complete this year. The most recent expansion finished last April when McCarran added 10 gates.

“Breakfast of Champions” Program Hits Home Runs
AIA Tampa Bay forging lasting relationships with representatives
For most of the last decade, AIA Tampa Bay members have been making a profound difference in their community by reaching out to state legislators in an informal, yet engaging way. Started by Mickey Jacob, AIA, currently president of AIA Florida, and Henry Woodroffe, FAIA, president, Woodroffe Architectural Corporation, the chapter’s periodic “Breakfast of Champions” brings together architects and legislators to discuss what’s going on in the city and how architects can help shape their communities by providing counsel, expertise, and, yes—contributions.

Happy Spring!
March 20 marks new beginnings for the earth and all of her stewards. Wishing beautiful landscapes and sites for all of our built creations, and beautiful, sustainable creations for all of our precious landscapes and sites.

Construmat 05 Promotes Sustainability, 21st Century Housing
April 11–16 exhibition in Barcelona to host more than 2,000 exhibitors
Construmat 05, one of Europe’s largest construction exhibitions, takes place this year in Barcelona on April 11–16. Now in its 14th year, Construmat 05 will have more than 2,000 booths from 50 countries in an exhibiting area of more than 35 acres. This year’s emphasis is on sustainable building and housing for the 21st century. The event also is emphasizing the business relations between Europe and the Americas by organizing workshops and symposia that promote business interactions among companies of both regions. To that end, the biennial event—which brings together architects, engineers, builders, interior designers, manufacturers, and wholesalers—will offer symposiums that feature AIA President Douglas L Steidl, FAIA; AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L. Koonce, FAIA; AIA COTE Chair Daniel Williams, FAIA; and RIBA President George Ferguson. For more information, visit the Construmat Web site.

Entries for Sustainable Construction Awards Due March 31
The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, a foundation of Holcim, a global supplier of concrete, currently seeks sustainable projects for its Global Awards competition. Prizes total US$2 million. Eligible projects must have reached an advanced design stage but not yet be under construction. Awards are divided into five geographic regions: Africa and Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North America. Entries will be assessed by regional juries headed by five of the world’s most renowned technical universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. The five regional winners will participate in the global competition to be carried out in 2006. Awards entries will be evaluated against five “target issues” of sustainable construction. Evaluation criteria and competition rules are explained in detail on the Holcim Foundation Web site. Entries can be submitted only via the Internet and are due March 31.
