Another Soft Month in November for Architecture Firms
Architects generally content with number of available construction products; performance gets mixed review
The up-and-down pattern of business conditions at U.S. architecture firms continued in November, with billings declining slightly compared to October levels, but inquiries for new work remaining strong, according to AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA, in this month’s Work-on-the-Boards column. Baker also tells us that firm billings have been erratic since midyear.

Kudos and Accolades Abound in the Peach State
The Georgia chapter of the AIA presented four Honor Awards for Architecture and three Honor Awards for Interiors at the chapter’s 2004 Design and Honor Award gala in Atlanta October 16. The chapter also awarded seven Bronze Medals, given to AIA Georgia members for distinguished and outstanding service to the Institute and the community; four Service Awards; and the Young Architect Award. In addition, the chapter bestowed its highest honor, the Bernard B. Rothschild Award, upon outgoing AIA national board member Stephen T. Swicegood, FAIA. The Rothschild Award is given in recognition of most distinguished service to the profession of architecture in Georgia.

Membership Terminated for Violation of AIA Code of Ethics
The Institute’s Board of Directors has terminated the membership of Samuel Y. Harris in the Institute and in the College of Fellows for violating Rule 2.104 of the Institute’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (1997). In doing so, the Board concurred in an earlier decision by the Institute’s Executive Committee approving the decision and penalty imposed in this case by the National Ethics Council (“NEC” or “Council”). Section 8.142 of the Institute’s Bylaws and Chapter 8 of the Rules of the Board require that the Board review and concur in all terminations of membership for violations of the Code of Ethics.

Three Chosen as Top Continuing Education Providers
Strong continuing-education programs advance the building industry for all. Firms share culture and skills, components create strong networks, and service and product providers offer continuing education to clients as a way to build trust. The AIA Continuing Education System department offers its congratulations to this year’s AIA Continuing Education System Awards for Excellence winners.

Happy Holidays!
In celebration of this glorious season, AIArchitect This Week will not be published on December 24 to give staff some time with family and friends. Look for an abbreviated edition on December 31, then full steam ahead in the new year.

The AIArchitect staff wishes all a joyous holiday season and health, peace, and prosperity in 2005.

PROJECT WATCH
Cesar Pelli & Associates Goes Underwater to Soar to Great Heights
Built on behalf of the Japanese government, the new National Museum of Art, Osaka, by Cesar Pelli & Associates, occupies a difficult but important site that shaped and inspired the architects’ design. The striking and inventive solution is a building constructed like a three-hull submarine placed below the flood level of the surrounding rivers. Rising above the water like silvery reeds are open-form spires of tubular steel, which begin underground in the reception level of the museum, bursting through the glass skyline to soar as high as 170 feet, forming a sculptural icon on the Osaka skyline.

Words to Avoid in Proposals
Aside from failing to properly qualify during discovery, nothing ruins your chances of winning a proposal more than a jargon-laden proposal. Proposals for architectural work that are brimming with consultant-speak drive clients to the competition faster than you can say “paradigm shift.”

Top 10 COTE Awards Call for Entries
The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE)—in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® and Target Finder programs and BuildingGreen Inc.—invites U.S. licensed architects to submit high-performance, sustainable design solutions for the 2005 AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Projects competition. An overall winner will be selected from the three finalists. Winning firms will receive a certificate presented at the 2005 AIA National Convention in Las Vegas in May.
