Hurricane Relief Update Bulletin
AIA New Orleans, AIA Louisiana,
AIA national component join forces with local community-based organizations: As New Orleans begins to look toward the initial planning efforts
for the massive task of its rebuilding, the AIA is fostering a community-based
team that already has a strong working relationship in supporting
smart-growth and community-development initiatives.
AIA delivers architects’ rebuilding
message to the public: In
newspapers across the country—including the September 30 Times-Picayune—AIA
members are delivering the message of the need for long-term planning
and inclusion of local architecture firms in the rebuilding of the
Gulf Coast
region. Additionally, AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L.
Koonce, FAIA, outlined the architect’s role in relief and recovery
on Fox Evening News September 25.
Damage assessments ready to begin in
Mississippi: In addition to
training more than 100 architects last week in Jackson and Biloxi,
Miss., the AIA continues with FEMA, the Red Cross, and Salvation
Army to set up and staff “one-stop centers” for building
assessments, which could begin as early as October 1, pending an
executive order from the governor granting temporary “Good
Samaritan” status for architects. (Pictured: AIA Mississippi
members tour damage caused by an enormous barge that washed ashore.

Help Find These 53 Architects!: The
AIA national component and AIA Louisiana continue efforts to locate
all Gulf-Coast architects with displaced practices and have found
307 out of 360. We have the names of the remaining 53 (and 34 firms)
in the full-text story—click on the GO button. Can you help?
NCARB will assist record holders, ARE candidates
in hurricane-stricken areas: And the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners will help with
record for displaced architects as well.
Rita adds to woes: Hurricane Rita
compounded the Gulf Region’s misery and redoubled emergency
and relief efforts.
FROM OUR FRIENDS AT AIA
GEORGIA
Bernard B. (Rocky) Rothschild, FAIA, 1915–2005
It saddens us to notify you that the indefatigable
Bernard B. Rothschild, FAIA, passed away on the morning of September
16. For almost 60 years, Rocky Rothschild performed continuous, dedicated
service at the local, state, regional, and national levels of the
AIA. Rocky touched the city of Atlanta, the profession, and all those
he came in contact with. He will not be forgotten.

Nevada Cancer Institute Merges Health
Care and Hospitality
Marnell Corrao: “You won’t
find a medical facility that looks quite like this”
Planners of the new $52-million Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) flagship facility
in Las Vegas turned to Marnell Corrao Associates, architects for the MGM/Mirage,
Harrah’s, Bellagio, and Wynn Las Vegas properties, to design a state-of-the-art
medical research and patient-care facility. The firm translated their experience
in the hospitality market to create a technically excellent and leading-edge
research and clinical institution that’s “incredibly appealing
for patients,” says Heather Murren, NVCI president and CEO. NVCI, which
officially opened last week, responds to statistics that rank Nevada well below
the national survivorship rate for all types of cancers.

PRACTICES
Integrated Practice: It’s Not
Just About the Technology
“Perhaps the greatest misconception I hear about the emerging transformation
to practice is that ‘it’s all about the technology,’” says
Norman Strong, FAIA, the AIA’s 2006 vice president for integrated practice. “This
is definitely not the case.” In this article, Phillip Bernstein, FAIA,
Autodesk, clarifies the crucial understanding that technology is just a catalyst
in this change, a single component of integrated practice, and not an end in
and of itself.

Hampton Roads architecture
The Hampton Roads chapter of the AIA has been awarded $2,500 as the first recipient
of the Emerging Professional Component Grants. Founded in 2004 and launched
at this year’s Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference, the
program was established “to assist AIA components in the development
of programs that foster the mission of young architects and associates.”
APEC Architect Register
for International Practice Operational
On September 19, a system for multi-national recognition of profession credentials
for registered/licensed architects with an established number of years’ experience (seven for
U.S. architects) went into operation. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) Architect Register is intended to facilitate architects in one of the
currently 14 participating jurisdictions (called “economies”) to
elevate standards for professional competency, share knowledge, engage in joint
ventures, and facilitate multi-lateral recognition agreements.
