  New Hotel Tower Helps Create Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District
Chicago-based Goettsch Partners has been commissioned by Riyadh-based Saudi Oger Ltd. to design the 17-story King Abdullah Financial District Hotel, north of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The $130 million project is currently in the design phase and scheduled for completion in 2011. The business hotel is sited in the 400-acre financial district—a brownfield now in development—and will be one of its first buildings. Goettsch Partners is seeking LEED™ certification for the project.

Riverfront Residence: Greening the Desert
Several years ago, architect Bil Taylor designed and built a 3,800-square-foot house in a small lot next to a river. As if the challenging conditions weren’t enough—a cliffside site, the hot climate of the Sonoran Desert, the size and shape of the lot, and what the architect considered a modest budget—Taylor decided the house would also have the first modern desert roof garden in the United States.

AIA Iowa Awards Excellence for Design, Sustainability
AIA Iowa has honored five Iowa buildings and three Iowa architecture firms with the 2008 AIA Iowa Excellence in Design Awards, emphasizing the importance of design excellence in the community and the profession. The component also named three Iowa buildings and three Iowa architecture firms winners of the 2008 AIA Iowa Excellence in Sustainable Design Awards.
