2009 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture Credit Spirit, Community, and Ingenuity
An AIA jury chose nine projects to receive 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture. The selections focus on structures in which forms tread lightly on the earth. The recipients, including two cathedrals, two student centers, a private residence, an affordable housing complex, a youth center, a large office building, and a museum, share a commitment to offering sanctuary for building users. Seven of the projects are in the U.S; one is in Monterrey, Mexico; and the other is in Beirut.
2009 AIA Honor Awards for Interior Architecture: Renovation and Reuse Provide Avenues for Sustainable Architecture
Proving that sustainability is now a universal consideration, the 10 diverse projects selected for the 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Interior Architecture all display a strong sense of environmental responsibility. Whether they’re recycling a former structure, repairing the site, or investing in “green” materials, these projects show that sustainability is merely another factor to consider in creating successful design and no longer perceived as a limiter of form and style.
2009 Honor Awards for Regional and Urban Design Focus on Mixed-Use Density
Six projects were selected for the 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Regional and Urban Design. Two plans are located in China; two in California; and one each in Illinois and Arkansas. The projects focus on mixed-use density and sustainable strategies to renew once-vibrant areas or to make way for new populations and urban development. Two projects renew defunct military bases and transform them into community treasures.
