Childs
Presents a Refined Freedom Tower Design
Design development work revealed at AIA New
York Chapter’s design
award program
SOM’s David M. Childs, FAIA, on June 28 presented final changes
to the design of Freedom Tower, the soaring skyscraper designed for the
site of the World Trade Center destroyed in the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001. Childs made the presentation, which he said marks
the end of the project’s design development phase, as a prelude
to the AIA New York Chapter’s 2006 Design Awards.
Hugh Stubbins Dies at 94
Hugh Stubbins, FAIA, an icon of American Modernism,
died July 5 in Cambridge, Mass. “Mr. Stubbins was one of the
great masters of our profession in the latter half of the twentieth
century,” said
Stubbins Associates President and CEO Scott Simpson, FAIA. “He
pioneered bold forms (the parabolic roof at the Berlin Congress Hall),
innovative structural systems (Citicorp), unique use of materials
(the aluminum skin panels at the Federal Reserve Bank), new technologies
(the tuned mass damper), interesting juxtapositions of Modern and
traditional symbolism in architecture (Mitsubishi Estates in Japan),
and great versatility in style (from Modern houses in the ’50s
to Fifth Avenue Place in Pittsburgh to the Ronald Reagan Presidential
Library).

A School Building Designed to Teach
Roanoke, Va., magnet school teaches math, science in its design
Math and science students at Roanoke Academy for Mathematics and Science (RAMS)
literally are surrounded with their lessons. RAMS is an 84,000-square-foot,
pre-K–5 elementary school located in a 27-acre park in residential Roanoke,
Va. Local architect Spectrum Design centered the exterior and interior design
of the school, which opened in 2005, on creating a “building that would
*teach” through its architectural spaces and details. RAMS is a federally
funded magnet school, meaning it is a public school that draws students interested
in specific subjects—in this case, math and science. It also offers a
program for disabled adult students.
