Hermine Mitchell Dies at 78

 

The AIA national component received the sad news that Hermine Mitchell, Hon. AIA, died June 15 at the Cathedral Village in Roxborough, Pa.

A founder in 1981 of the AIA Philadelphia Architecture in Education program, which teaches architectural problem-solving skills to K–12 students, Mitchell was closely involved with the AIA Philadelphia Chapter and Philadelphia Foundation for Architecture.

Among her many activities, Mitchell was a founder of the AIA Bookstore in Philadelphia, an honorary director of the Wyck National Historic Landmark House and Garden, a member of Society of Friends, and active in the Citizens Council of Whitemarsh Township and the League of Women Voters.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, 1979 AIA President Ehrman B. (Mitch) Mitchell Jr., FAIA, a founder of Mitchell Giurgola Architects (now MGA), Philadelphia; two children, Eric and Marianne; and three grandchildren.

“She was a great influence in Mitch’s life,” AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L. Koonce, FAIA, wrote as he informed the AIA Board of the loss. “We are deeply sorry to know that she is gone.”

A memorial service was held in Philadelphia on June 27. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Hermine S. Mitchell Fund at The Center for Architecture, c/o AIA Philadelphia, 117 S. 17th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
