2007 AIA Housing Awards Honor 19 Recipients
The AIA is pleased to announce the 19 recipients of the 2007 Housing Awards. The Housing Awards program, now in its seventh year, recognizes the best in housing design and promotes the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable national resource. The categories are:
- One-and Two-Family Custom Residences
- One-and Two-Family Production Homes, Multifamily Housing
- Special Housing.
A State-of-the-Future Surgical Platform at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Established in 1884, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City is the world’s oldest and largest private institution dedicated to preventing, treating, and curing cancer. In addition to providing patient care, Memorial Sloan-Kettering conducts an extensive research program and offers training and education for scientists and physicians. Senior medical planner Douglas Gordon, AIA, explains that to take advantage of technological advances, improve efficiency for medical staff, and make room for a growing patient base, Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz began a massive renovation and expansion project in 2000 at the cancer center’s main campus. The 68,000-square-foot surgical platform opened in May 2006 with 21 operating rooms as well as support areas and pre-op and recovery areas.
AIA Kansas City Honors Royal Designs
AIA Kansas City’s Design Awards celebration culminated Design Week 2006, which featured several of the component’s popular public offerings, including an architectural tour, a public forum based on the Principles of Civic Design, and a lecture by juror Jennifer Yoos, AIA. This year’s Design Awards recipients were announced the night of the event, complete with jury commentary. The attendees celebrated a total of 20 awards—8 Honor Awards, 6 Merit Awards, 3 Citation Awards, and 3 Committee on the Environment Awards. |
