Taking Care of Business: CORRECTION
HOK’s Role in Creating the Indianapolis International Airport
Summary: Our story on the construction of Indianapolis’ greenfield international airport in the November 17 issue failed to give proper credit to HOK for their major role in programming and design of the project. We apologize and attempt to set the record straight.
According to Pat Askew, AIA, HOK’s senior vice president and managing director of HOK Aviation:
HOK was hired in June of 2002 by the Indianapolis International Airfield to serve as the master architect for the entire Indianapolis International Airport Midfield development. HOK was charged with:
- Programming and functional planning for the new Midfield Terminal, roadways, and parking garage (critically to include the developing requirements just after September 11, 2001)
- Preparing a master development plan for all aviation-related uses for non-terminal facilities
- Guiding the "aesthetic" design concepts of the all highway and entrance structures.
HOK subsequently was responsible for developing concept alternatives for the terminal, roadways, and garage, then for development of the chosen terminal design alternative through schematic design. As schematic design progressed, HOK suggested that the local A/Es be brought on to participate, under HOK's leadership, during the design development stage, and that they would assume a majority role during construction documents and construction administration. AeroDesign Group was hired by IAA and observed the completion of schematic drawings and then worked under HOK's direction during design development drawings.
HOK is the designer of the Midfield Terminal. ADG executed HOK's design during construction documents and was the architect of record. Therefore, HOK should be credited with planning, programming, and design that responded to new requirements established after 9/11. Additionally, any credit for the initiation and building design approach for sustainability and potential LEED® certification belongs to HOK and the Master Architect engineering team. |
