University of Iowa Opens Doors to Guitar-Shaped Art Building

The University of Iowa in Iowa City opened its new 70,000-square-foot School of Art and Art History building on September 8. Designed by New York City-based Steven Holl Architects, the design for the new art building sits on the bank of a quarry pond and is based on Pablo Picasso’s 1912 sheet-metal-and-wire Guitar sculpture.

DMJM to Design University of Dubai Campus
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, has approved the design and development of the new University of Dubai campus by DMJM Design. The $136 million project, encompassing 3 million square feet, will accommodate nine university buildings totaling 450,000 square feet.

AIA West Virginia Honors Four Projects
Every year AIA West Virginia recognizes the most outstanding architecture design projects within the Mountain State, as well as projects outside the state that were designed by members of the chapter. This year’s honored projects numbered four: a federal courthouse and a railroad station restoration (honor awards recipients), and a student union and a juvenile center (merit award recipients).
