Livable Communities: A Multidisciplinary Dialogue on Designing a Sustainable Future
Randolph Jones, AIA, vice chair of the AIA Regional and Urban Design Committee, recounts the results of AIA members joining forces with regional and city planners, urban foresters, ecologists, economists, demographers, developers, and elected officials to explore “livability and sustainability” across America at the Livable Communities: Walking, Working, Water Conference in Seattle, September 14–17.

Rybczynski Wins Eighth Vincent J. Scully Prize
The National Building Museum announced on September 11 that its distinguished panel of jurors chose architect, author, and educator Witold Rybczynski, Hon. FAIA, to receive the eighth Vincent J. Scully Prize, established in 1999 to recognize exemplary practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design.

Humanitarian Architect Believes Sustainability a Necessity
Cameron Sinclair, cofounder and executive director of California-based Architecture for Humanity and author of Design Like You Give a Damn: Architectural Responses to Humanitarian Crises, shared his recent humanitarian design experiences with a gathering of approximately 40 architects and students September 25 at Ashoka Headquarters in Arlington, Va.

AIA Partners with Chamber of Commerce to Get Out the Architects’ Vote
The AIA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are partnering this fall on a bipartisan program to encourage architects to vote in the general election November 7. The groups have launched www.ArchitectsVote.com, a Web site to help architects register to vote, apply for absentee ballots, and identify candidates in their districts.
