Morphosis’s
Thom Mayne, FAIA, Captures 2005 Pritzker Prize
Thom Mayne, FAIA, who
founded his now internationally renowned firm Morphosis in 1972, has
been chosen as the 2005 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
This award celebrates a three-decade career in which the Los Angeles-based
architect has garnered 54 national, state, and local AIA Awards as well
as numerous other honors around the world. The 61-year-old Mayne is the
first American Pritzker Prize recipient in 14 years.
AIA Baltimore Chooses 13
Design Award Winners
Thirteen proved to be the lucky number for AIA Baltimore architects
when the chapter extended kudos and congratulations to 13 projects—8
built and 5 unbuilt—late last year. Following are comments
from jury members Stephen Kieran, FAIA; Frank Matero, AIA; and
Ali Rahim, AIA, all of whom teach at the University of Pennsylvania.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S
OFFICE
Convention 2005: Imagine, Create, Transform,
and Lead!
AIA President Douglas L Steidl, FAIA, is not making
a pitch for members to attend the national convention and design expo
for continuing ed or entertainment. Steidl instead reflects on the
very reason the Institute’s founding members formed—and
mandated—the annual
national convention in 1867, and the responsibility of today’s
architects to carry forth the tradition.
USPS to Release “Modern
Architecture” Stamps at Convention
The U. S. Post Office will release the “Masterworks of Modern
American Architecture” series May 19 at the AIA 2005 National
Convention and Design Expo in Las Vegas. The series, which will be
available for first-day purchase and cancellation at the AIA Store
on the expo floor, will feature a dozen classics: Frank Lloyd Wright’s
Guggenheim Museum, New York City; Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert
Hall, Los Angeles; Paul Rudolph’s Yale Art & Architecture
Building, New Haven; William Van Alen’s Chrysler Building, New
York City; Mies van der Rohe’s 860-880 Lake Shore Drive, Chicago;
Richard Meier’s High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Robert Venturi’s
Vanna Venturi House, Chestnut Hill, Pa.; I.M. Pei’s National
Gallery of Art East Building, Washington, D.C.; Louis Kahn’s
Exeter Library, Exeter, N.H.; Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal, New
York City; Philip Johnson’s Glass House, New Canaan, Conn.; and
Bruce Graham/SOM’s John Hancock Tower, Chicago.
Business Week/Architectural
Record Awards
The BW/AR awards program will not be scheduled for 2005. If
you would like to be placed on the mailing list for the next call
for entry, please send a request with your name, address, phone,
and e-mail to: bwarawards@aia.org

Millennium Park Bike Station Offers Viable
Commuting Option
Tucked away in the northeast quadrant of Chicago’s Millennium Park, a 12,000-square-foot
bicycle station is fast becoming the jewel of the park for many Chicagoans. Designed
by Chicago-based Müller & Muller Architects for the Chicago Department
of Transportation, this 300-bike parking/changing station quietly opened last
summer amid the flourish of big-spectacle projects, such as Frank Gehry’s
band shell. However, since then, the “Little Station that Could” has
been operating at capacity and now has a lengthy waiting list for locker
space.

Software Piracy Could Mean Walking the
Plank
Architects responsible for using unlicensed software, whether
knowingly or not, are at risk of up to five years’ imprisonment
and fines up to $250,000. The software industry loses nearly $29
billion a year globally to piracy. Because computers make it easy
to create an exact copy of a software file, software piracy is
widespread. But architects may not be aware that the software they
are using is an illegal duplicate made by software pirates.
New
Residential Design Show Welcomes Architects
Residential Design 2005, Build Boston’s Spring convention and tradeshow,
welcomes all AIA members to this inaugural event April 6–7 at the Seaport
World Trade Center in Boston. This convention, sponsored by the Boston Society
of Architects in association with AIA New England, AIA New York Chapter, and
others, provides architects with a unique forum to discuss issues relating to
residential design and network with a broad range of building-industry professionals.
For details on programs and events of special interest to AIA members, visit
the Residential Design 2005 Web site.
Kresge Foundation Expands
Green Building Initiative
If you have nonprofit clients, take note. To encourage nonprofit
organizations to incorporate sustainable building practices, the
Kresge Foundation has allocated additional funds for its Green
Building Initiative, which offers grants, educational materials,
and green building workshops to nonprofit executives interested
in sustainability. The new planning grants encourage arts, health,
and human services nonprofits to explore green building, and are
available in amounts ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. To learn
more, visit the Kresge Foundation’s Web site.
SDA Holds Convention
in Tandem with AIA Convention
Group to meet in Las Vegas, May
18–21
The Society of Design Administration (SDA) is gearing up for
its 36th national convention to be held at the Las Vegas Westin
Casuarina Hotel and Spa, May 18–21. The SDA convention, held
each year in conjunction with the AIA National Convention and
Design Expo, offers up to 16 hours of certified credit in six
aspects of practice management specifically geared towards design
firm administrative personnel. Scholarships are available. For
more information about SDA and its programs, visit them at the
SDA booth in the AIA Expo Pavilion in Las Vegas or on their Web
site.
