Seven Receive Honorary Membership
The AIA is pleased to announce seven new Honorary Members. Their contributions range from recording architectural treasures through photography to building industry alliances; from providing a strong, clear voice for the Institute to faithfully serving and promoting AIA chapter members. These outstanding individuals will be presented formally as Honorary Members in June at the 2004 AIA National Convention in Chicago.

The group donates proceeds from the program as scholarships to community groups teaching today’s youth the importance of arts in the community. Children Design the Future
Three new books offer useful resources
AIA members and components across the country work with schools and youth groups to teach children about the design and planning of communities and buildings. Students learn the nuts and bolts of design and that their involvement can shape the way their communities grow, says Megan M. Susman, the AIA’s program manager for Livable Communities. This early exposure to participating in design processes can help these children grow up to be involved, informed citizens. Three recent publications can also be helpful to architects interested in involving children in community design.

HKT Architects prove you can teach an old building new green tricks
The restoration of the Cambridge City Hall Annex by HKT Architects Inc. with architect of record David Perry Architects, Inc., has shattered the myth that green design is solely the province of new buildings. HKT principal Bill Hammer, AIA, says, “Most people are familiar with sustainable design in new buildings, but it is achievable in a historic preservation project, makes a lot of economic sense, and can make for a healthier and more productive workplace.”
