Calatrava
Unveils WTC Transit Hub
Santiago Calatrava unveiled his concept for the World Trade Center
Transportation Hub January 22, revealing a design that he says honors
those who perished in the September 2001 terrorist attacks, inspires
survivors, and significantly improves mass-transit connections across
Lower Manhattan.

Nathaniel Kahn’s My
Architect: A Son’s Journey
details his poignant search for his father,
Louis. I. Kahn
Anyone with any connection to architecture in the latter half of
the last century knows of Louis I. Kahn: genius and creator of some
of the best-known and most-admired buildings of the time and beloved
professor of architecture at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania.
He talked to bricks, and they answered him truly. An Estonian immigrant
whose face and hands had been scarred by a burning coal when he
was a child, he emigrated to America at the age of three, and grew
up to be the husband of Esther and the father of Sue Ann. Most also
know that he died on a return trip from India, alone in New York’s
Penn Station men’s room in 1974, and that his body lay unclaimed
for days. Most don’t know that Kahn had crossed out the address
on his passport, making identification difficult. Why?
AIA
Baltimore Honors Home-Grown Designs
AIA Baltimore proudly honored the 10 winners of the chapter’s
annual Design Awards program late last year at the Maryland Institute
College of Art’s Brown Center, followed by a Beaux Arts ball.
Presenting the awards was AIA Baltimore President David Segmiller,
AIA, who revealed the identity of the Grand Design winner, which
had been kept secret until that moment. Chosen from a field of 73
entries, this year’s chosen projects represent the finest
work of chapter members, and all but one are in the Baltimore area.
The chapter also honored the winners of its Residential Awards program.
PROJECT

Just Too Cool! SLL/Leo A Daly Puts St. Paul Project on Ice
The project may be ephemeral, but the designers approached the 2004
Ice Palace in Saint Paul with the same gusto as a building meant
to stand the test of time. Volunteer designers from SLL/Leo A Daly,
the Minneapolis office of Leo A Daly, designed this shimmering 36,000-square-foot
palace for the Saint Paul Winter Carnival.
The
AIA Angle
The AIA Angle, the AIA members’
source for government news, offers these stories in the latest edition:
Proposed legislation to benefit corporate
taxpayers: Congress may provide new tax incentives for certain
business activities; Supreme Court Hears
ADA Case: Implications may affect profession; ADA
and Accessibility Guidelines
(ADAAG) May Change: New
rules would be first major alteration of ADAAG in 10 years. For
these stories and more, visit the AIA
Angle Web page.
AIA Officer Nominations Open; Filing
Date Is April 12
Thirteen architects already have declared
their candidacy for three national AIA offices.
Your Kiplinger Connection (members
only)
Federal budget: Nobody wants to
talk about the deficit during an election year, but it is an inflationary
concern. Tech & telecom: Watch
out for Internet identity thieves. Digital video recorder prices
are plummeting. Small firms will get big telecom price breaks. World
business: Europe is showing increasing promise.
AIArchitect offers AIA members exclusive access to three
stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for
the coming year. Nonmembers
may subscribe to The Kiplinger Letter.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Are We Blinded by the Light?
High light levels are equated to security. Light is also an attention
grabber. But to star gazers, ambient light means minimal astral
visibility. And, some lighting experts argue, there is such a thing
as too much light as glare can create driving hazards, and energy
wasted in unnecessary illumination is costing over a billion dollars
a year, estimates the International Dark Sky Association. There
are design solutions.
AIA
Offers Free Online Course on New Federal Qualifications Form
Mandatory use of SF330 begins in June
AIA eClassroom has just released “AIA22: Using the New Standard
Form 330 for Architect-Engineer Qualifications,” a new continuing-education
program online, free to members, to help navigate the recently released
SF-330, the streamlined federal form that architects must use in
place of SF 254/255 to present their qualifications and experience
when seeking to provide services on federal projects. The federal
government unveiled the form January 12. Generally, solicitations
issued before the June 8 effective date will require submission
of SF 254/255; solicitations issued after June 8 will require the
SF330.
Mold
Resources Growing
Eleven new resources have recently been added to the NCEF
Resource List “Mold in Schools,” including links to
several Web sites featuring extensive information on mold issues
and remedies, such as McGraw-Hill Construction’s Mold Update
Center, which offers an “Ask the Experts” section and
materials on mold and remedies.
NEA Awards Grants to Varied
Architecture-Related Projects
The National Endowment for the Arts awarded grants to several design-related
organizations for 2004. The NEA funds projects that have national,
regional, or field-wise significance; that tour in several states;
or that provide an unusual or especially valuable contribution because
of geographic location. This includes local projects that can have
significant effects within communities or that are likely to serve
as models for a field. The size or type of applicant organization
is not a determining factor.
EDRA, Places
Announce Design, Planning, Research Awards
Due February 23 are entries to the seventh Environmental Design
Research Association/Places awards
program recognizing excellence in three areas:
- Completed projects—including architecture,
landscape architecture, urban design, public art, interior design,
and environmental graphic design—that excel as human environments
- Proposals for future design, use, or management of a place and
encompassing urban design, preservation, environmental management,
community development, facilities planning, and visioning
- Investigations of the relationship among physical form, design,
and human behavior or experience.
