New Web Site Takes on Global Warming
Renowned energy architect Ed Mazria spells it out

In the film The Day After Tomorrow, a scientist tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. Unfortunately, the end result is worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods, and the beginning of the next Ice Age. The good news, however, is it’s only a movie. But, wait, could this really happen? Oh yes, says Ed Mazria, and he’s got a Web site that may change the way we all look at building design forever.

1897–1906: The AIA Moves to and Changes Washington
The 1896 AIA Convention decided that it was finally time to answer the question of where the permanent headquarters of the Institute should be, and delegates chose Washington, D.C. The U.S. government was, even then, the largest single builder in America, and Washington was where legislators who controlled federal funding sat. It was also the headquarters city for many other national organizations with which architects shared common interests. Historian Tony Wrenn, Hon. AIA, reveals the inner thoughts and outward processes of the preeminent architects of the time who essentially created the capital city we know today.

Nine Outstanding Professionals Tapped for Hon. AIA
We would like you to welcome nine very special people into the AIA family. They are individuals who, although not architects by profession, have given distinguished service to the profession of architecture or the allied arts and sciences, and thus have made all of our lives richer. One of the most important messages we share is gratitude toward those who support and uplift architects and architecture; in this spirit, the Institute is very pleased to bestow on these nine individuals the title of Honorary AIA.

AIA San Francisco Launches ArchCasts Podcasts
The medium is part of the message
Tech-savvy Bay Area architects are offering a new program to their members and to the Worldwide Web of architecture aficionados. AIA San Francisco recently launched ArchCasts, its free downloadable podcast audio program featuring conversations with component members on the topics of working with an architect and sustainable design. The series, which has other programs on tap, was created to help demystify and explain the design process to the general public. ArchCasts are available online at the chapter Web site and can be downloaded at the iTunes Music Store.

Touchdown! Pittsburgh Architects Already Are Champions
AIA Pittsburgh presented 15 Design Awards as part of Design Pittsburgh, an annual series of events held last fall to celebrate architectural design in the region. A jury of architects from Seattle, headed by David Miller, FAIA, Miller/Hull, and including Anne Schopf, AIA, partner, Mahlum Architects, and Edward Weinstein, FAIA, principal and founder, Weinstein A/U Architects + Urban Designers, selected the recipients.

AIA, which took second place in last year’s contest.)

TISP Annual Congress Coming Up February 15–17 in D.C.
See the latest in building security

Join the Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP) for its fifth annual Congress on Infrastructure Security for the Built Environment on February 15–17, in Washington, D.C., and earn 13.75 AIA/CES learning units. Held in conjunction with the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Conference and Expo, the conference highlights best practices in security-related design, construction, technologies, and materials, as well as information on risk and mitigation strategies, liability issues, and other security challenges for the built environment. The Congress will feature speakers and panelists from the White House, the Department of Homeland Security, Congress, the intelligence community, industry, and academia. The AIA is a founding member of TISP, which was activated after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to promote protection of the nation’s critical infrastructure from human and natural hazards. TISP is a public-private partnership that includes the major design, engineering, and construction societies as well as key federal, state, and local government agencies involved in homeland security. For more information, visit the TISP Web site.

Muhammad Ali Center Is a Knockout
The architecture of the new Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville by Beyer Blinder Belle pulls no design punches to reflect the humanism and ideals of the boxing champion who once called himself “The Greatest.” The six-level, 96,000-square-foot Muhammad Ali Center, bordering the Ohio River in the downtown section of the city where Muhammad Ali was born, does more than celebrate Ali’s athletic skill and outspoken personality. Built also as an interactive cultural and educational institution, the Muhammad Ali Center shares and teaches Muhammad Ali’s beliefs in hope, understanding, and personal best, challenging the “greatness” of people through awareness and inspiration.

best practices IN RISK MANAGEMENT
Gimme Shelter
This month, risk management gurus Grant A. Simpson, FAIA, and James B. Atkins, FAIA, take on that most vexing and persistent of design challenges: moisture intrusion. Professional liability insurance specialist Victor O. Schinnerer reports that almost one quarter of claims against insured architects allege problems with waterproofing or a component of the building exterior closure. Many of these claims are related to failures in the exterior wall, so Simpson and Atkins have provided a quick run-through of building envelope basics and exterior wall fundamentals.

Heads Up: Entries for 2006 BIM Awards Due March 13
The Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Knowledge Community has issued a call for entries for the 2006 Building Information Model (BIM) Awards, recognizing exemplary projects that have used integrated and interoperable building information models. This year’s call for entries builds on the innovative responses received from the first awards in 2005. Awards will be given for the best examples of the use of building information models in the following categories: Creating Stellar Architecture Using BIM, Design/Delivery Process Innovation Using BIM, Inspirational Pilot Projects Demonstrating New Ways Forward, Academic Program or Curriculum, Analysis or Simulation, and Jury’s Choice. Submissions should be emailed to tap@aia.org no later than 5 p.m. ET on March 13. For more information, visit the TAP Web site.

Did you know . . .
In 1950, the AIA Board voted to rebuild the garden behind the Octagon, under the direction of James R. Edmunds Jr., AIA. Landscaping included erection of a memorial at the southeast corner of the building, dedicated to AIA members “who gave their lives in world conflict for the security of their country and the cause of peace.” Sculpted by Lee Lawrie, Hon. AIA, that stele remains the sole vestige of the 1950 landscaping.
