Register now for the
AIA-ACADIA Fabrication Conference, November 10–13 in Toronto
and Cambridge, Ontario. The conference features top architects and
the latest research on digital fabrication, and is sponsored by the AIA
Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Knowledge Community and the
Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) in conjunction
with the Ontario Association of Architects. The conference will present
international experts to explain how the new technology can transform
the architect’s
role in the building process. Conference hosts are the University of
Waterloo School of Architecture in collaboration with he University of
Toronto Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
Discussion will cover a spectrum of critical issues affecting architecture
today under the aegis of “How can emerging industrial processes
reshape building design and construction?” Architects, environmental
and industrial designers, software developers, engineers and manufacturers
will take part in this interdisciplinary dialogue.
Specifically, this groundbreaking conference will address:
- The role of computing in architectural fabrication, including digital
design tools, new materials, and construction systems
- Case studies describing design, digital methods, new materials in
built work, and new developments such as interactive systems
- Exhibits considering the relationships between architectural representation,
digital media, and fabrication.
Presenters will consider digital interfaces and production tools and
discuss their long-range implications. Practical workshops, tours, and
exhibits will complement the presentations. In addition to on-site displays
of new rapid-prototyping machinery, design work, and material samples,
a proposed exhibit exchange with the UK-based Building Centre Trust will
offer exposure to leading-edge European building technologies. Additional
events accompanying the conference will include a SmartGeometry Workshop
on parametric modeling and an Education Summit focused on teaching digital
design. For details, visit the conference Web site or contact Douglas
Paul, TAP Committee project manager, 202-626-7386.
