Cleveland Eyes 100 Acres for Waterfront Redevelopment
Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects envisions a new cityscape

Summary: From the mouth of the Cuyahoga and east along Lake Erie, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has plans to relocate current Port facilities further east to open up the prime lakefront property for mixed use development, connecting the existing neighborhoods and business districts to their long-lost waterfront. The authority selected Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects to create the plan to reinvent the city’s image as a thriving lakefront destination.

Leading a design team of Van Aukin Akens Architects LLC, Atelier 10, Moffatt & Nichol, Projects for Public Spaces, Moody Nolan Inc., Regency Construction Services, Inc., and Economics Research Associates, EE&K Architects will put to work its 30 years of experience, which includes Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, to bring the people of Cleveland back to their waterfront.

The plan—moving a maritime port and transforming the waterfront into something vibrant and accessible while retaining a sense of the Cleveland experience—is the challenge the team will have when it presents its development strategy to the Port Authority Board in August.

“The underlying goal of our work will be to create a destination that incorporates Cleveland’s unique character,” said Stanton Eckstut, FAIA, principal-in-charge of the master plan. ”Waterfront redevelopment and place making are two of this firm’s strengths, and we look forward to working with the Port Authority to reinvent the lakefront of this great American city.”
