With a Relaxed Dignity, Portola Valley Town Center Is Buttoned Down, but Stands Up Straight
The jointly designed project settles a vibrant community space into the landscape
Portola Valley Town Center, by the architecture firms Siegel and Strain and Goring and Straja, uses reclaimed and recycled materials to complement and respect the natural landscape of surrounding redwood forests. While maintaining a rustic, organic air of informality with their cabin-like materials, the buildings’ emphasis on civic space marks them as dignified public structures.
AIA Columbus Honors Eight Projects
AIA Columbus announced the winners of its 2008 Honor Awards, which recognize design excellence achieved by the component’s members, giving members an opportunity to be evaluated among peers, gain recognition for their work, and promote exemplary design. The 2008 winners include three honor awards and five merit awards. The awards were announced in January at an awards presentation at the Knowlton School of Architecture, The Ohio State University. Jurors from the Philadelphia area judged the submissions. The lead juror was Scott Erdy, AIA, a principal at Erdy McHenry Architecture.

Rock and Roll Annex opens in New York City
New York City-based Montroy, Anderson, DeMarco designed the new 25,000-square-foot Rock and Roll Annex, the first outpost of the famed Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Annex opened last November, houses artifacts from Cleveland, and traces the history of the music genre in New York City. The Annex is located in the SoHo section of the city and follows an “industrial grunge” theme in the cellar of an 80-year-old cast-iron building. There are aspirations by the nonprofit Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to brand itself worldwide in additional cities; however, the Annex and additional outposts will be profit ventures. The client for the project is Running Subway, a production company. |
